ASS". FASTENING" Foa BEDSTEA WILLIAM H. MCPHERSON, OE NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND WILLIAM N. CARR, SR., OF SAME PLACE.
Design No. 4,708, dared March 14, 1871.
DESlGN FOR FASTENINGS FOR BEDSTEADS.
The Schedule referred to in these Let-ters Patent and making part of the same.
I, WILLIAM H. McPHnnsoN, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State ot' Tennessee, have iuvented au original Design for a Fastening for Bedsteads, Ste., of which the following is a speciiication.
Nature and Ubjects of the Invention.
My invention relates to a device primarily intended for connecting the rails and posts of bedsteads, adapted in superior degree to forni tight and strong joints, and to dispense with the use of tools and necessity for skilled help in setting up and taking down articles to which it may be applied.
The device consists of a tongue or tenen, applied preferably to the post, a socket therefor, applied preferably to the part, and a locking-wedge, working between shoulders on the respective parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
My present invention consists in the shape or conformation ofthe said three several parts.
Description of the Accompanying Drfrwing.
Figure 1 is a face view of contiguous portions of a bed-post and rail, united by a fastening, illustrating this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section, on the line z s, iig. l.
Figure 3 is a perspective of the post part detached.
Figure 4 is :i perspective ofthe rail part.
Figure 5 is a luce view of the locking wedge.
Lilie letters oi" reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
General Description.
A represents a post, and
B, a rail of a bedstead.
C represents a fiat block of metal, to form a tenon, and z a cylindrical stein cast on the same, and provided With a transverse notch, y.
a: represents a cavity in the post A, for the reception ofthe stern r: ofthe tenon G; and
D a pin or screw, passing through the notch y of said stem, to retain the latter.
E represents a metal plate with a facial projection, w, attached to the outer side of' the rail at its end, by screws F, and forming a socket for the tenou O.
e represents a vertical groove in the outer face of the tenon G; and
fu, a continuation of the saine, cut through the projection w of the socket-plate E.
G represents a wedge, adapted to be driven into the groove c u in the tcuon C and socket-plate E, and by acting against the outer shoulders 1 l ofthe respective parts ofthe groove to clamp the said tenou within its socket, and thereby complete the joint.
The parts are released by driving up the said wedge.
The wedge G, and the groove Jv u for its reception, each have one straight or vertical and one inclined side. The straight side of each is perpendicular; the inclined side perpendicular in the tenon groove c, and dovetailed in the socket groove u. Both sides may be under-cuter dovetailed in the socket groove.
H represents a screw, attaching the wedge G to the socket-plate E; and ta slot in the said wedge, parallel with its straight side, for the reception of said screw.
The parts are adapted to be cast of complete forni without the aid of cores.
Ciaz'ims.
I clailn as my inventionl. The shape or conformation of the tenon C, as shown and described.
2. 'lhe shape or conformation of the socket E, as represented and set forth.
15. The shape or conformation of the Wedge G, as
shown.
