Description

in'ted mes C. H. FESSENDEN, OF
CANDOR, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 100,993, dated .March 22, 1870.
IMPROVED BEDSTEAD-FASTENING.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making pan of the same.
To all Iwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. H. FnssnNnnN, of Candor, in the county of rlioga and in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedstead-Fastenngs; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification ofthe same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distin guished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
The nature of my invention consists in securing together the rails and posts of bedsteads, by means cfa semicircular brace with a dovetailed tapering groove attached to the bed rails, and designed to fit a dovetailed cleat secured to the bed-post.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, which illustrates my invention, and forms a part of the specification thereof, and in which corresponding parts are represented by similar letters- Figure l is a perspective view of a bedstead with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2v is a detached view of the parts composing the fastening.
.The construction and and operation of my invention are as follows:
A- semicircular brace, A, is provided with dovetailed tapering grooves, B, and apertures C. The side of the said brace, intended to lit against the side of the rail, is perfectly flat, but the inner side is hanged vat la b, in order to facilitate the construction of the dovetailed grooves. Having been thus constructed, the said brace is secured by means of screws inserted through the perforations C to the ends of the bed-rail.
The cleat D is provided with the tapering dovetailed tongues d, of 'such a size as to exactly fit the ,dovetailed grooves B and apertures e e, through which the screws or bolts pass, by moans of which it is secured to the bed-post.
Having secured the braces A to the ends of the rails, and the cleats D to the bed-posts, as aforesaid, the said rails and posts are joined with facility, by
merely slipping the grooves B over the dovetailed tongues d.
The semicircular form of the fastening thus constructed and applied, causes it to act as a brace to hold the parts firmly in position, and prevent them from rocking, and being attached to the `inside of the bedstead, the trouble of mortising is obviated.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I will indicate what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, in the following clause:
In combination with the bed-posts and rails, the
-semicircular brace A and cleat D, when constructed to operate as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 30th day of September, 1869.
