Design No. 3,913, dated lifmch 22, 1870.
DESIGN FOR BURIAL CASKETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES DAHLINGER, of the city of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have produced a new Design for Burial-Gaskets and Coiiins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part hereof, iu which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burial casket, illustrative of my improved design.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a section of iig. 2 through the line x-x.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
My improved design for burial-Gaskets and coins is confined to the conformation of the head-piece and foot-piece of the casket or Collin, and consists in making these parts each of five sides of equal or nearly equal length or width, and each placed at au angle to the other, the contained angles being equal or nearly so, and this irrespective ofthe exterior surface ofthe pieces composing the top and bottom, which may be plane0gee, or otherwise curved or ornamented.
Thus, in g. 1, a a' a" represent three of the ve sides, the remaining two corresponding in forni to those shown at a a. The side a' is shown with a panel.
In figs. 2 and 3 the side 11" is shown paneled, and the remaining four sides, b l1', each with an ogee face,
but, in any case, other forms of curvature orornameutation may be adopted for the face.
The mode of applying the ogee ornamentation to the plan pcntagoual sides is illustrated in fig. 3, where the lines s s indicate the pentagonal form which I claim.
In the construction of coffins and burial-Gaskets 1` swell is made at or near the ehest, so called, an the sides taper either in curved or straight lines freir that point, either way, to or toward the ends. It wif be observed that in the design described the pontegonal ends are exclusive of and are included between the extremities of such tapering sides.
What I claim as my improved design for cofns and burial-Gaskets, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe peutagonal form for the ends, the faces constituting such pentagonal form being exclusive of and iueluded between the extremities of the tapering sides, as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I, the said CHARLES DAHL INGER, have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES DAHLINGER.
