Description

J. BURT.
Carriage-Seat Back.
No. 70.517. f Patented Nv 5, 1867.
M424., w W 'r UNITED STATES PAEENT OFFICE.
JOHN BURT, OF STURGIS, MIGHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SEAT BAKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 70.517, (lated November 5, 1867,
To all 'whom it 'may concem:
Be it known that I, JOHN BURT, of Sturgis, in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Seat Backs; and I do hereby declare that theI following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a perspective.
The peculiarities of my invention consist in the method of constructing the backs of vehicle-seats by Shaping and bending a single board in such a manner that the back and sides may be formed without break or joint in one continuous length, with a graoeful and easy-reclinin g angle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will now (lescribe its mode of construction.
I first take a suitable piece of Wood, of proper length and thickness, and having' fashioned it into something like the shape it is ultimately to have, it may then be softened by the means of hot water or steam. l place it in a bending-machine, by means of which it is pressed or bent into the desired shape. It
should `be observed that the former, upon which the back of the seat is formed, should possess the shape designed to be given to the back, thus giving`to it and the sides any inclination or curvature that may be required.
By the above-described process I can make vehicle-seats at a far less cost than by the old method, while in elegance of' proportion and beauty of finish they are equal to those of the most expensive construction. It is proper to observe that I dispense entirel)T with the use of angleiron, as the back and sides are sufficiently strong without them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The within-described vehicle-seat, in which the back and ends, with round corners, are formed from a single piece of Wood, of proper' length and thickness, shaped and bent to the desired shape, as set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BURT. Witnesses:
BRACEY ToBEY, A. M. MILLER.
