TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, EUGENE PAULUS, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have originated and designed a new and improved Pattern for tho Top Plate of a Watch, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying specimens or drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a top view ofthe plato, as seen when the case and cap of the watch are open, thc main feature being delineated by the red boundary line at X.
Figure 2 represents an inside view of the reversed plate, plate. R S is the recess made in its thickness, te hold the click-spring The object of this new design is a new arrangement to have the balance-wheel on the left and the windingarbor on the right side, being seen when opening the case, which is a noticeable and useful improvement of that which is, usually done. The winding-arbor being opposite the opening-joint of the case-cover and cap, they cannot interfere with or impede the lingers when winding the watch, which is done more easily, and with less danger of breaking the main-spring, and, by` this new system, both joints of the case-cover can bc placed oppesite the stem ofthe watch.
The configuration of this three-quarter plate may be generated by the ordinary circular line around the centre, and a peculiar carving into the diameter, so as te leave in view a larger part ofthe work than usual, being formed by a circular curve around the winding-arbor, deepening into the diameter by two peculiarly symmetric curves, joining the centre on one side, and the generating-circle on the other. Besides, a double symmetric curve is formed around the balance-rim on cach side of the circular curve around the pallet-jewel, and joining the centre on one side, and the generating-circle on the other, so as, the movement being in the case, to joint the inside circle by the two angles or Sharps corners A B. y
H I J denotes a raised or upper part, managed on the surface of the plate, dclineating a curve symmetric to K L, and forming a thicker part, in which are made proper recesses O P for the click and ratchet-wheel.
The top plate is held on the pillars of the'lout plate by the three screws ab c, placed at equal distance of each other, and d is a peculiar screw to fasten the movement in the case. F is the balance-bridge. G is thc doublecapjewelled bridge, being represented here in order to show the general appearance and feature of this new style of watch-frame.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The design or new pattern for a three-quarter top plate of a watch-movement, with a rising or upper part on its surface for the click-work, the whole formed and delineated by the red boundary lines, and quoted by the letter X, substantially as described and represented in the accompanying drawings.
Philadelphia, July 31, 1868.
