Description

DESIGN.
W. H. GRINDLEY.
WITNESS:
Patented Feb. 16,1897.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM II. GRINDLEY, OF CONGLETON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO \VILLIAM S. PITCAIRN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A EWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 26,630, dated February 16, 1897.
Application filed December 15, 1896. Serial No. 615.818. Term of patent 3% years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. GRINDLE Y, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Congleton, in the county of Chester, England, have invented a new and original Design for a Ewer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a ewer embodying my design, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the plane of the line a: :c in Fig. 1.
The leading features of my design are as follows:
The body of the ewer A is composed of six panels a a a" a', &c., bounded by lines b b b" b', &c., which form the edges of the panels. These lines are each continuous curves, and starting from the lip Z or upper edge of the cwer each of them first curves inwardly toward its central vertical axis, then downwardly, then outwardly, then inwardly, and then outwardly, losing itself in the base. The panels thus formed are each, therefore, wide at the middle, narrow above and below the middle, and widening again at the top and bottom. Each panel also shows a slightlyconvex curve in cross-section. At the lower termination of each edge very slightly-enibossed scrolls spring from the base and gradua-lly lose their identity as they approach the middle of each panel.
The upper edge of the ewerisa continuous curved line upwardly concave, but depressed at each junction wit-h the edges of the side panels, except where the edge is lost at the handle and where it is not so depressed. The lip of the ewer is curved upwardly and then outwardly, terminating at the top of the line b. The outside surface of the ewer at and beneath its upper edge is ornamented with scrollwork slightly embossed, which gradually loses itself in the surface of the ewer. The handle is a reverse curve provided with outwardly-curved knobs or projections.
Vhat I claim is The design for a ewer substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. GRINDLEY.
