Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST LAUSCHKE,
& SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE,
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
BI'EGIFIGATIOH forming Application filed J nun-11 26,
part of Design No. 18,969, dated March 19, 1889.
1889. Serial Ho. 297.726. Term of patent 1t yearl- To all whom it may concern.-
lle it known that I, ERNST LAUSCHKE, a sub jeet of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, 5 have invented a new and original Design for a Font of PrintingType, of which the follow iug is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.-
case letters, upper-case or large-size figures, points,ddllar-mark, character 86, and two or naments. Its general characteristic is the grotesque and freakish irregularity of all the lines, which particularly consists in making 1 all the upright strokes irregularly tapering from one end to the other and irregularly swelled at the larger end,but terminatingahruptlythat is, without curvature-at the tip go of such swelled end. This feature is illustrated in nearly all the'vertical strokes of both upper and lower case letters, as lowercase b, d, h, i, k, l, p, q, r, and t, and in the exclmnation-point, and figures 1, 4, and 7, and uppercase letters A, B, D, F,H, I, J,K, L, M, N,P, R,"l, V, \V, X, and Y. -An analogous characteristic is the similar taper and irregularly but abruptly swelling termination of certain lines, as the oval ofilower case letters 3: a, l), c, d, e,p, and q and upper-case letters B. (l, D, E, G, l, R, and S. The irregular and freakish character of the lines is further marked in the principal strokes or stems of uppercase-A, B, and M, which, in addition to being irregularly tapered, as already described with respect to some such strokes, have a prominent irregularity or swell about halt-way between the final swell and the middle point of the stroke, whence it diminishes quite abruptly and continues comparatively light to tho finish. A characteristic analogous toihis last is observable in the vertical stroke of lower-case b, in the middle stroke of cnpilnl M, in the final stroke of capital N, and the .5 BT01 0! capital R, wherein a slight enlarge- This design consists of upper and lower.
ment occurs about midway 111 the entire length of said strokes, respectively, except in the instance of lower-case h, where the onlargement occurs immediately. opposite the upper expanded end of the oval.
Another characteristic, tending to produce the grotesque appearance which marks the design, is exhibited in tne ovals of lower-case b, d, p, and q, which are disjoined from their stems at the swelled or enlarged end of the oval where they would ordinarily join, and at the other end reverse their curvature, so as to be very slightly concave outward, making their acute angle with the stem on the inside of the oval. The same characteristic appears 1 in the ovals of capitals ll, D, l, and R. A
1 like characteristic is noticeable in lower-casth and in the form of the second element of lowercase n1 and n. In addition to these characteristics the principal clemenisoi (-api this A, H, V, and all four elements of capital \V are bent convex outward.
I claimhe design for a font of p rinting-type herein shown and described, wherein letters have irregularly gotesque or freakish forms characterized by the irregular tapering of the lines'and terminating the same with abrupt enlargements in some lines, as of capitals A, B, and M, and by reversing the curvature of the ovals of such letters as lower-case h, d, t. and q and upper-case ll, I), l, and R at the junction of such ovals with the stems, causing them to make acute angles with the stems on the inside of the ovals, and by irregularly bending the principal strokes or stems of sour ecnpitals, as A and ll, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have s01 my hand, at hicago, Illinois, this 12th day of .hinnnry,
ERNST LAUSCHK'E.
