EX D5379 OR n 171880 DESIGN.
W. S. FRIEDLANDER.
ORNAMENTATION 0F PABRIGS. No. 17.880. Patented Nov. 15, 1887.
Wimesses: Inventor his Attorney.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. FBIEDLANDER, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO JACOB S. BERNHEIMER & BRO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR THE ORNAMENTATION OF FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No.17,880, dated November 15, 1887.
Application filed October 7, 1987. Serial No. 251,767. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. FRIED- LANDER,a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Ornamentation of Fabrics, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
The drawing represents a surface printed or otherwise provided with my newly-designed pattern.
The leading feature of my invention is the conventioualized representation of quilting upon textileorotherfabrics0fcotton,silk,wool, or other substance; upon mohair, woven goods, or goods composed of one or more substances; upon leather, paper, or any other suitable substance, whether flexible or not.
In the drawing, A represents a surface divided in this instance into squares a, the lines forming the sides of the squares running diagonally across the material, similar to quiltingstitches. These squares a have printed, stamped, or otherwise fixed upon their sur- 7 faces at least two colors or shades of color. One co1orsay the darker or stronger colorbeginning at one side of a square where it is deepest, extends with gradually-diminishing intensity over about one-half the surface thereof. The other color-say the lighter or fainter color-comn1encing at the opposite side, extends with gradually-diminishing intensity over the remainder, or until it reaches the first color, when it blends therewith along about the vertical diagonal of the square. The darker color may extend over a little more than one-half of the square in order to give a deeper shade to the representation. \Vhile it is generally intended to have the same colors on all the squares or quilting figures, these may differ in color, only so that each has for itself differing colors or shades of color.
I claim The herein-described design for the ornat mentation of fabrics, consisting in the conventionalizcd representation of quilting in squares, each of thesaid squares being in different colors or shades of color, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereofIaEfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM S. FRIEDLANDER.
