Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. SPARKS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE STEIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A BURIAL-CASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 13,286, dated September 5, 1882.
Application filed July 19, 1882. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. SPARKS, of Rochester, Monroe county, New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Burial-Caskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying photographic illustration, which shows the casket set on edge for the purpose of more fully exhibiting the ornamental design.
This design relates to the end of the casket, the cover, and the center block, as hereinafter more fully described.
Ordinary burial-caskets with polygonal ends have one of the faces or sides of the polygon at the extreme end and standing squarely at right angles to the sides of the casket. The end of the casket has usually three of these faces or sides exclusive of the sides of the casket itself, one face or side standing in the center and one on each side of the center. The leading feature in my design is a casket with polygonal ends having four faces or sides exelusive of the sides of the casket, the center angle of the polygon coming in the longitudinal center of the casket, with the faces or sides on each side ofthis angle, the two center angles at opposite ends of the casket representing the greatest length of the casket, as hereinafter described.
In the illustration, a a a a show the four faces or sides of the polygon exclusive of the sides of the casket itself.
I) b b b b show the five angles between the faces. The bottom and top moldings or ogee are of the same form-43. 0., have the same number of sides and angles, as shown. One of the angles b comes in the longitudinal center of the casket, presenting a corner in the center, and the other angles come equally on the two sides. The faces a a are consequently arranged on opposite sides of the center angle, presenting in such case inclined surfaces each side of the center. The greatest length of the casket is from center angle to center angle at opposite ends of the casket. By this means a hi ghly-ornamental efl'ect is produced, as the stiff square ends ordinarily presented are avoided.
The cover 0 and center block, d, are of similar form at their ends, having four faces and five angles to correspond with the general outline of the casket. In addition to these features these parts have each a straight bevel, f, extending up from the polygonal edge to the top surface, and at the top is a regular curved line, g, which extends around the whole perimeter. This presents an ornamental and pleasing appearance to the eye.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The design for a burial-casket consisting of polygonal ends having four faces or sides exclusive of the sides of the casket, and five angles, one of the angles coming in the center of the end and presenting a corner iii the iongitudinal center of the casket, as herein shown and described.
2. The design for a burial-casket consisting of the cover and center block having polygonal ends, a straight bevel extending from the polygonal edges upward to the top surface of said parts, and a uniformly-curved line at the top of the bevel extending around the perimeter, as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. SPARKS.
Witnesses LEO. STEIN, J N0. H. MCANARNEY.
