To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NroHoLAs BENmoAsA, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in collar buttons, the object being to provide a collar button which is so constructed that the same can be readily forced through the button holes of the col lars, thereby overcoming the disadvantages with collar buttons now in use.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a collar button with a telescoping shank whereby the length of the shank can be increased to accommodate different thicknesses of collars and the like.
A further object of my invention is to provide a collar button which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is composed of a very few parts which are so arranged and connected together that all danger of the parts becoming accidentally detached is prevented.
A still further object is to provide a collar button with a sectional head which can be folded in such a manner that the two scctions of the head will lie flat one upon the other in order that the same can be forced through the button hole.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for locking the sections of the head in their normal positions so that the sections will be held in a horizontal position.
With these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved collar button. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to that of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view.
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a base A having a convex bottom A provided with a tubular stem A extending upwardly therefrom over which is adapted to be arranged a tubular shank B which is provided with upwardly project ing ear portions B which are transversely apertured through which is adapted to extend a pivot pin C on which is adapted to be mounted a head D.
The head D is formed of two sections D, D provided with apertured ear portions D D which are pivotally mounted on the pivot pin C in such a manner that the sections can be swung upwardly until brought into engagement with each other so that the same can be readily forced through a button hole. In the drawing I have shown the section D semi-oval shaped and the section D semicircular shaped, but it is of course understood that these sections can be formed in any shape desired, so as to form a circular head.
Mounted on the pivot pin C between the ears D and the section D of the head D is a link E to which is connected a coil spring F which has its lower end secured in an eye A formed on topof the base A and it will be seen that the tendency of the spring is to hold the tubular shank B down over the tubular stem A in such a manner that when the head is forced through a button hole the same will be prevented from yielding but by drawing outwardly on the head the tubular shank can be drawn away from the tubular stem so as to increase the distance between the head and base in order to accommodate the different thicknesses of shirts and collars. The link E is provided with an upwardly projecting pin portion E on which is pivotally mounted a locking bar G which is adapted to be seated in grooves D D 'formed in the sections of the head D when thrown into the position shown in Fig. 1 so as to lock the sections of the head down on top of the tubular shank B so that the same will be held in a rigid position, whereby all danger of the button coming out after being placed in position is prevented. It will be seen that by mounting the locking bar G on the pin portion of the link E the bar can be raised when it is desired to release the sections of the head as the spring will yield by drawing outwardly on the bar. The sections of the head are also provided with cut away portions or grooves as clearly shown at H adapted to receive the locking bar G when thrown in alinement with the pivot pin C so that when the sections are thrown into a vertical position, the bar will be out of the way so as to allow the sections to swing on their pivots. By this construction the sections of the head are held in a closed position by the action of the spring F in such a manner that a very rigid head is formed and at the same time a head is provided that can be swung into such position that the same can be forced through a button hole without any danger of injuring the $31116 111 any way.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a collar button which is provided with a telescoping shank and a sectional head which are so mounted and held in their proper positions that a, but ton is formed which will greatly facilitate the placing of the. button within .arbuiton hole or removing the same therefrom,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters. Patent, is:
1. A button comprising a base having a tubular stem, a tubular shank slidably mounted upon said stem provided with apertured ears, a sectional head provided with ears adapted toregister with the ears. of the said shank, a pivot pin extending through said ears and a spring connecting said pivot pin to said base.
2. A button comprising a base, a telescoping, shank mounted upon said base, a head formed of two pivoted sections mounted upon said shank, said sections being provided with recesses, a spring connecting said head to said base, and a locking bar actuated by said spring for holding said sections in the same plane. a 7

A collar button comprising a base having a tubular stem, a tubular shank slidably mounted upon said stein provided with apertured ears, a pivot pin extending through said ears, a head formed of two sections provided Wit-h apertured. ears mounted upon said pivot pin, a link mounted upon said pivot pin provided with a pin portion, a locking bar pivotally mounted on said pin portion, and a spring connecting: said link to said base.

A collar button comprising a base provided with a tubular stem portion, a tubular shank slidably mounted over said stem pro vided with spaced apertured cars, a pivot pin extending through said ears, a head formed of tfWQ; sections provided with apertured ears pivotally mounted upon said pivot pm, said sections being provided with grooves or recesses in, their outer faces. in alineinent, a link slidably mounted upon said pin provided with a pin portion, a looking bar pivotally mounted upon said pin portion. of said link adapted to be seated within said grooves, and a coil spring con nected to said link having its opposite end connected to an eye carried by the base.
