WITNESS: INVENTOR.
A TTORNE Y.
PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN B. EVANS, OF EUDORA, KANSAS.
SHIRT-BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1920.
Application filed November 19,1919. Serial No. 339,154.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN R. EVAN S,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Eudora, in the county of Douglass and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in shirt buttons, and one object is to provide a button of this character which will serve either as a collar button or a cuff button.
A further object is to provide a button which may be adjusted to readily enter the button holes of a collar band or a cuff and then adjusted to reliably hold it in place.
Another object is to provide a button consisting of a plurality of adjustable parts, which are permanently connected together, so that one or more parts are not likely to become detached and lost. 7
Other objects will hereinafter appear, and in order th-atsaid invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the button adjusted to the position it occupies when in place in a collar band or cufl.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the button.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the button in extended position, preparatory to being inserted in the button holes of a collar band or cuif.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section of the button in its extended position and revolved about oneeighth of a revolution on its axis from the position disclosed on Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a vertical cross section of the button in the position disclosed on Figs. 1 and 2.
In carrying out the invention I employ a tubular member 2 provided at one end with a marginal flange 4 of suitable diameter.
6 designates a tubular cap slidably mounted upon the tubular member 2 and having a reduced end 8, so that it may be readily passed through the button holes in a cuff or a collar band. The closed end of the cap 6 is provided with a peripheral groove 10 to receive the well-known bifurcated clip employed on neck ties to hold the same in position.
12 designates an internal retractile spring connected at its ends to the flange 4 and the closed end of the tubular cap 6, for the pur= pose of normally holding said cap in the lowered position disclosed in Figs. 1 and 5. The tubular member 2 and the cap 6 are further connected by a plurality of arms and links 14 and 16, respectively. Each arm 14 is pivotally connected at one end to an car 18 projecting from the tubular member 2 and at its opposite end to one end of a link 16, each of which latter is pivotally connected at its opposite end to cars 20 projecting from the tubular cap 6.
The tubular cap 6 is held in raised positlon against the action of the spring 12 by a resilient detent 22, fixed at one end to the tubular member 2 and having its opposite end bent at an angle and extending into an aperture 24 in said tubular member 2. The tubular cap 6 has a notched portion 26 to engage the top of the detent 22 and thus coact therewith in holding the cap 6 in raised position, as disclosed in Fig. 3.
The tubular cap 6 has a longitudinal groove 28 extending from the notch 26 and adapted to pass downwardly over the detent 22 when the bent end thereof is pressed into the aperture 24 to disengage said detent from the notch 26 and permit the tubular cap 6 to be drawn to the position disclosed in Figs. 1 and 5, by the spring 12. The detent 22, the notch 26 and the groove 28 coact in preventing the tubular cap 6 from rotating on the tubular member 2, and thus possibly damaging the spring 12, the arms 14, and the links 16.
In practice the button is extended to the position disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4, to draw the arms 14 and the links 16 close to the tubular member 2 and the cap 6, so that they may readily pass through the button holes of a collar band or cuif. The detent 22 is then pressed inwardly to release the cap 6 and permit the spring 12 to draw said cap 6 downwardly and lower the arms 14 and the links '16, against one side of the collar band or cufl, while the flange 4 engages the opposite side and thus reliably holds the button in position so that there will be no danger of it becoming lost. In order to remove the button it is extended to draw the arms 14 out of engagement with the adjacent side of the collar band or cufl, so that the button may be readily withdrawn.
The button may be made of any suitable material and of plain or ornamental design, and while I have shown and described the preferred construction, combination and arrangement of parts, I reserve the right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims;
Having thus described my invention,.what, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-' upon the member when said means is released, and elements operably connecting said member and the cap and adapted to eoaet with the flange in holding the button in active position. Y
2. A button consisting of a tubular member provided with a flange, a cap slidable on saidtubular member, a detent to hold said cap in outwardposition on the tubular member, a retractile spring to draw the cap inwardly on the tubular member when the detent is released, links pivotally connected to the cap, and arms pivotally connected to said links and the member to eoaet with the flange in holding the button in active position.
In testimony whereof-I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
