Description

s; DoUeLAssyoF RICHMOND, vnRMoNfr, AssieNon To W10 noUeLAss AND A,fs.}DoUe-Lnss, or SAME PLACE.
l .Letters .Patent N 97,618, dated December 7 -1869.
IMPROVED CARRIAGE-JACK.'
ToV all whom fit 'may concern -Be it, known that lfi/'rnnmiilt S.- DoUGLAss, of Richmond, in the countyof Chittenden, and State `of' Vermont, have invented a new 'and improved Liftin g-A Jack; and I'doherebyrdeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction,
and operation of the same, reference being `had to the accompanying drawing, making a part oi' this speci- '1ication, 4which drawing is a longitudinal vertical Sectiom This invention consists ofaforked vertical standard, having `a' series of notches inv itsinclined top, andA bands placed oversuch notches in such mauuerias to form inclined guidewaysunder the bands, of which guidewa'ys the notches form part, and in which guideways the pin that forms the.levei'fnlcx:umslides, when the pinisA notresting' in a pair of the notches, such slid` ing beinglfor'the purpose of stationing the fulcrnm at a higher or lower point,1a s maybe desired, and the lever being ,so pivoted as to be self-locking.
In the drawingi -I l A is `the forked standard, the two larmslof which have each a seliesof notches, a, in their upper ends, said upper end and series of notches being inclined.
B is the lever, whose `fulerumfis the pinb, placedA near one end,'such lever'working in the recess Ihetween the two arms of the standard, and its`fulcrun1- The Schedule referred to in these. Letters Patent and vmaking part of the same.
myc-
pin 'projecting to each side of it, so as to rest in two of the notches (t, one in each arm, at .the same time.
By locating the fulcruni in a loweror-higher place in' the inclined series of notches, it may be adapted to lift objects of varying altitudes.
Bands, C, of iron, or other metal, are bound over the .inclined tops of the arms in such manner as to forni'inclined gnideways @which the fnlcrum-pin may "traverse, the bands C preventing its displacement.
It will be observed that the, lever B has an eccentric head, in which the pin b is so placed that the point on which the load rests is in awel-tical plane between the fnlcruin and the body of the lever when thelatter lis pressed down. Hence the weight of the'oarriage 'upon the lever-head renders the latter self-locking, and obviates the necessity of bail-attachment.
Havingthus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by -Let- Vters Patent, is-
p The forked standard A, provided with the inclined seriesof notches a, in combination with the self-locking lever B and bands C, substantially as and for the purpose described.` Y
