CHARLES W; WALLER, OF CHICAGG, ILLINOIS.
NOISE-ARRESTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Application filed March 23,1909. Serial No. 485,208.
following, taken in connection with the drawing, is a descrlption.
My invention has for its object the production of a, device designed to be worn upon the head of a person for the purpose 0 excluding noises, as for instance when a person is disturbed by the noise of the moving train, especially when in a sleeping car. This device is simple, easily adjusted, occupies but little space, and is very effectual for the purpose for which it is intended.
Various modifications in detail touching the construction and arrangement of the defferent parts of the device will suggest themselves to the manufacturer; I do not wish to be'limited in this regard and the forms shown are but illustrations of an embodiment of the invention.
, In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation illustrating the device as applied to the he'ad of a person; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail showing an edge view of the sound arresting attachment applied to the ear; Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the device, illustrating in dotted lines themanner of folding the device into small space; Figs.
4, 5 and 6 are different forms of making the ends of the spring adjustable; Figs. 7 to 13 inclusive illustrate different forms of ear plugs; and Fig. 14 is a plan view of the hinge.
In carrying out my invention A represents a metal spring frame adapted to fit over a persons head as shown in Fig. 1, and bent inwardly at the ends thereof as shown .in Fig. 3. This spring A is provided with a hinge a at the center thereof, and with the hinges a, a at each side thereof to permit the device being folded into small space as shown in dotted lines in. Fig.3. The sidehinges a, a, and center hinge a are each provided with a stop a, (Fig. 14) to prevent the spring frame from opening outwardly farther than is shown in Fig. 3.
,tirely dispensed with if B is a padding of any suitable material, upon the inside of the spring A, and may be extended as near tofthe ends of the spring I A as-found desirable.
B is a covering of fabric, leather,- or any other suitable material, which extends around the spring and pad as shown. A covering 6 may or may not be provided over the hinges on as desired.
The spring A is-provided at the ends thereof with means for holding the ear plugs or buttons in position. In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 I have shown different forms which have been found practical, Fig. 5 being the preferred form, as it is capableof greater adjustment. In each case the plugs or buttons C are inserted into one of' the openings 0 and held in position by frictional contact. In Figs. 7 to 12 I have shown different forms of plugs or buttons d, c, f, g, It, 2', j, which may be used with my device by secur= ing them in the spring as shown in Fig. 3. The forms illustrated at d, g, It, 11,-j, are adapted to be inserted inside of the ear passage, While the forms shovn at c, f, are adapted by pressure against t e7-outside of the ear to close the passage, thereby exclud- 1 111g noises.
To better maintain the spring A in position upon the head of the wearer I have provided a head band D, which may be of elastic or any suitable material, secured to the spring A upon each side of the head and extending around the head of the wearer as shown in Fig.1. This, however, may be endesired.
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a spring frame adapted to fit over the top of a persons head, said frame provided with a hinge at the top and upon each side thereof, a pad, a covering around said pad and frame, the free ends of said frame having apertures therein, plugs or buttons adapted to fit into said apertures and be held in position by frictional contact, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of. a spring frame adapted to over the top of a persons head, a band.
