ment in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that'tlie following is a full, clear, and exact description thereo``, whichwill enable others skilled in the art tomake aiidnse f'the same, reference being had to the-accompanying drawing, ibrmiug'part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is atop -view of a bedstead, illustrating my invention, part of the rails being .broken away to show the construction.-

My invention has for its object to so improve the construction of bedsteads thatthe slats may be secured iu place without thenseof ledges or strips attached to the inner sides of the rails, and which'shall at the same time allow the ,said slats to be conven-` iently taken out and put in when required; and

It consists-"in the manner in which the slats are connected with the rails of the bedstead, as hereinafter more fully described.

A- represents the posts, B the end rails, and C the side rails,cwhich parts are connected to each other in the ordinary manner.

'In the inner side of -one of the rails of the bed# stead are fo 'med grooves D, of such size as to receive the ends o g the slats E,\ and of such a depth as to give a rm support to the ends of the said slats, said lgrooves being formed in such positions as not to mar -or disiigure the edges of said rails.k

The slots ol"Iv grooves D in one rail areformed'only of snicient length to receive the ends of the slats,. but the grooves D in the other rail are lengthened at one end, so as to gradually decrease in depth till they come to the surface of the rail, as shown in vfigs. 1 and 2, thus allowing the slats toghe conveniently inserted and removed.

The slots D' are narrowed in their lengthened or extended portious,so as to form shoulders for holding the ends ot' the slats, or preventing them from slipping out, whereby the aid of hooks or pther fastening maybe, if desired, entirely dispensed with.

To enable the slats E to be more conveniently inscrted and removed, the ends of said slats are rounded o", as shown inl fig. 1.v

To stillfurther secure the connection between the -rails and slats, hooks F may be used, which are piv.

oted to eyes or staples attached to the inner sides of the rails, orr to vthe edge of the slats, and which hook into eyes on staples attached to the other of said paits,as shown in figs. 1 and 2.'

Having thus described my invention,

Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ise.-A

1. The slots D and D', formed in the inner sides of a bedstead, the'latter being lengthened and, also narrowed, to form shoulders for holding 'the contiguous endsof the slats, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination of hooks F with the slats and grooved or slotted rails of the bedstcad, substantially v as herein shown'and described, and for the purpose set forth.. D. M. ESTEY.
