TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:

Be it known that we, BQ C. ENGLISH and FRANCIS FEARS, of Springfield, Hampden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in Spring-Beds; and we do hereby-declare that the following is afull and clear description thereof, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, and to the'letters of reference marked thereon. This invention consists of a new and Aimproved arrangementof slats and springs, whereby the bed is made strong, lasting, and elastic, and'also adjustable. It isalso applicable to lounges, sofas,`and similar articles.

in construction, we form our bed of a number of frames, AIA A, 35e., set upon erosslbars B and B. These'- frames A each consist of atop and`bottom slat, Candi?, having springs E E, &c., between them, and being attached at their ends at1F and F. The upper Slat C is kept curved by the action oi' the springs-E E, Ste., and is fastened to the blocks G and Gvupon the ends of' theslat D by means of screws a a a. Rubber washers, Zi and are placed between the Slat C and the'top of the blocks G and CT, at the points where the serewsfa and a connect them, the screws passing through them. These washers allow the'slats to Spring without loosening the screws, and also prevent-them from crenhing at theirjoints. The blocks G on each framehave holes ont through them, so ythat the frames may he adjusted4 upon the rods B and B. f Setscre ws,ff, dre., are arranged in the blocks, and clamp the frames at each end upon the rods when screwed up, thus preventing` them from getting displaced. l l

The advantages of this arrangement are, that a superior spring is obtained which is noiseless, adjustable, and lasting; it can be manufactured ata cost not greater than theaverage oi' bed-springs sold. The slats being adjustable upon the'crossnods, any number-ofthem may be used that may'prove most convenient.

i Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;

1. The double Slat or frame A, consisting of top and bottom slats C and D, with springs E between them, and connected at their ends by means of the blocks G, screws a, and washers t., substantially as described.

2. The arrangement of the frames A upon cross-rods 'B and B, so as to be adjustable by set-screwsf in the man'nerishown. l v
