ISAAC SILVERNAIL, or BYRON-MICHIGAN.-
IMPROVED BURGLAR-ALARM The Schedule referred to in these Lettem.Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, [sAAc SILVERNAIL, of Byron,
in the county of Shiawassee, and in the State of Mich igan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Alarm for Gates and Doors; and do hereby declare that .the following is a-full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. The nature of my invention consistsin the'construction and arrangement of a self-alarm, to guard against burglars, and is applicable to gates as well as doors.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation ofthe entire apparatus, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the spring that strikes T6 the lower hinge is attached a small rod,a, which is provided with a pulley or wheel, 0.
This wheel is, by acord,;b, connected with a small wheel, D, attached to the large wheel E, which may be mounted in any convenient place, the cord 11 passing around one or more pulleys, (I, so that when the door is opened the cord will revolve the large wheel E.
The wheel D. is, by-another cord, e, connected with a spring, F, in such a manner that the spring will act in the opposite direction, turning the wheel E so as to unto set my hand, this 6th day of September, 1869.
close the door as soon as the force is removed'from the same.
At a suitable point is suspended or secured a bell, G, which isstruck by a wire spring, H, of the peculiar form shown in fig. 2.
At one end it forms a coiled spring, f, secured to a wall, or other suitable support, then bent so as to form the hammer g, which is inserted in'the bell G, and its outer end projecting along the front side of the wheel E,
On the front side of this wheel is a series of pins, v t' i, which, when the door is being opened and the wheel revolves, raises the outer endot' the spring H, and as it springs down or back after it leaves each pin, the hammer-part g strikes the bell G.
This deviceis very simple, and can be put up in any place desired, and connected either with the upper or lower hinge.
When the apparatus is to be attached to gates, the alarm-mechanism may be placed in the house, and the cord b carried through tubes, so as to make the connection.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The wire H, constructed or'hent as described, so as to form the coil spring f and hammer g, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The arrangement of the wheel E, provided with pins t 1, wheel or pulley -D, cords b 6, spring -F, and
pulley 0, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the gate or door A, hinge B, Q
pulleys O D, wheel E, with pins 'i i, cords b 0, spring F, bell G, and wire H, all constructed as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have here- ISAAO SILVERNAIL. Witnesses: 0.1L LEMON, J. A. OLMSTED.
