CHARLES A. SLACK, or ERENoHToWN, NEW JERSEY.
Leem Patent, No. 86,876, dated Fama/ry 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN ALARM-BEES.
The Schedule 'referred to in these`Lettex-s Patent and making part of Ithe same.
To all whom 'it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SLAcK, of Frenchtown, in the county of Hunterdon, and vState of New Jersey, have inventedl a new and improved Combined Alarm Door-Plate and Bell;` and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will -enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of `this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to an improved combination of name-plate, bell, and door-knob; and
It consists in providing the name-plate with a knob, and hinging it to the door, and connecting' the same, by a cord, to the trigger of a bell inside of the door, whereby the name-plate serves, also, as a bell-pull; and
It further consists in applying to the arbor of the door-knob, inside of. the door, a swinging arm, which is also connected to the trigger of the bell by a cord, which, by the turning of the knob to throw back thel spring-bolt, will cause the alarm-bell to` strike, and give notice of the entrance of any person, which will bemore fully described on reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents an outside view of my improvemeut attached to a-door.
Figure 2, an inside view of the same.
Figure 3,- a section on the line :v-a: of iig. 2
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A represents a name-plate hinged to the door A', and provided with a knob,'by which it is adapted to the uses of a bell-pull, to which the cord a is fastened,
and 'which passes through a hole in the door, and is connected by the other end to the bell-trigger b.
B is the bell secured to the stud B', and
C is-the hammer 1attached to the bent arm c, which swings on the pivot e is a spiral spring, for throwing back the hammer to stl'ikea blow, after it has been moved around by the trigger against vthe spring, and disengaged from the saidtrigger.
d is a swinging tappet, pivoted to the inner end of the bell-crank c, against whih the trigger-b works to move thebell-crank, and which swings out of the way of the trigger when it is` drawn back to its normal position by the spring f.
h is an arm secured to the shank ofthe door-knobv D, and which is also connected to the trigger b by a cord, a. l"
flhe operation of ringing the bell is performed in al manner similar to that of bells as ordinarily constructed.
By pulling the knob on theplate A, the cord a draws the trigger down against the tappet (l on the bellfcrank, swinging the latter around against the action of the spring e, until the trigger passes by the tappet, and allows the spring to throw theliammer back and strike a blow on the bell.
When -the person attempts to pass through the door, without ringing the bell, by taking hold of the knob of the slidingspring-bolt, and turning the same to draw the bolt back, the arm h swings around, and, by means of its connection with the trigger b, gives a blow on the bell inthe same manner.
The connection between the arm hand cord a is so made that it can be readily disconnected if desired.
What I.claim as new, and desire to secure by Iietters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the spring-trigger b, pivoted latch d, bell-hammer C, cords-a a, and armh, connected to the door-knob, all as herein shown, whereby the bell is rungfrorn the same -trigger, by either the door-knob .D or door-plate knob A, as set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by meythis 8th day of February, 1868.
l 'CHARLES A.A SLAOK.
