IMPROVED ALARM FOR LETTER-BOXES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD H. RIPLEY, of Boston Highlands, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Letter-Carriers Alarm and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereot', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front or outside view of a portion of a door to which my improvement has been attached. Figure 2 is a vertical detail section of the same, taken through-the line a; x, fig. 1.

Figure 3 is an inside view of the same, part of the bell being cut awaythrough the line y y, fig. 2.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved attachment for the doors of houses, offices, 850., which are kept constantly or occasionally locked or bolted, which shall be so constructed and arranged asto enable the letter-carrier to pass letters and other small packages through said door, and,"at the same time, will notify the inmates of their delivery and It-consists in the construction and combination of operating it.

The plate B is made of such a size as to cover the slit in the door, and is securely attached to the outer end of the spindle O, which passes in through the door A, and upon the inner end of which is placed a coiled spring, D, one end of which is attached to the end of the said spindle, and its other end rests against, or is connected with a stop-pin, attached to the door A, or to the plate placed upon the inner side of said door. I

The spring I) serves the double purpose of holding the plate 15 down to its hearings, to prevent the ingress of rain, and to, bring the. plate B, when released by the operator, back to its place, covering the said slit in the door A.

To the inncr partot' the spindle O, is attached adog or tumbler E having anal-m formed noon it which by striking against stops attached to the inner side of the door, or to the plate attached to said door, limits the movement of the plate B.

The dog or tumbler E has two notches formed in its edge, upon which the catch of the spring-catch l catches.

The other end of the spring-catch F is attached to the spring-hammer arm G, which sounds the alarm,.

by striking the bell H twice, as the spring-catch F is released successively from the two notches of the tumbler E.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 5 1. The pivoted plate B, and rotating spindle G, for covering the slit in the door, and foroperating the alarm-1nechanism, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The. combination of the pivoted plate B, rotating-spindle G, coiled spring 1), dog or tumbler E, spring-catch F, spring-lmmmer G, andhcll H, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
