Description

UNITED l STATES PATENT EErCE.
JAMES H. CARKEEI, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE-ACTING HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 79,950, dated July 14, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. CARKEET, of Montgomery', in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot. this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal elevation ot my invention. Fig. 3 is also perspective, showing the manner of attaching the hinges to the stiles and jambe ot' doors, dw.
rlhe nature of this invention consists in the employment ot' a double-acting hinge so arranged that it will allow the door or shutter when closed to assume aparallel positionrwith the frame or partition; and it further consists in the employment ot a clutching device acting in conjunction with a hinge substantially in the manner hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe it-s construction and operation.
et represents a metal plate of suitable dimen sions, and having its ends curved and slotted on either side, as seen in Figs. l and 2, so as lo form a number ofjoints, the object of which will be referred to hereinafter.
b b designate two similar plates or win gs, also curved and slotted in like manner, forming `joints to tit in the corresponding recesses of the joints of plate c. Said win gs are furnished with screw-holes d tl, for the purpose of enabling them to be secured in place when desired. The' plate a and'wings b b are now hinged together by means of rivets or spindles g g, which are inserted in the receptacles of the joints formed on them. The upper parts ot' the plates ct a are formed with semicircular shoulders or projections. Said shoulders are furnished with holes, which will be referred to more particularly hereinafter.
h li designate two curved arms or bars, which are provided at their lower ends with clips, also provided with holes and formed or made similar to the projections or shoulders on plates a a, to which said clips are so pivoted that they will be allowed to have an up and down motion. These clips are furnished near their outer ends on each side with clutches or curved projections jj, which, when the bars or arms It h are raised or lowered, alternately clasp or close Wings b b and plates a a together, and thus prevent them, from unfolding when required.
It will be observed that one set of the wings b b is furnished with a slot, and curved, soas to allow the clutching device to lit in between the door and frame closely, and thus enable the door to be shut tight.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pivoted arm It, provided with two clutches,jj, so arranged that either one side or the other ofthe hinge may be clasped, while the opposite side is free to operate, thus allow- Y ing the door or shutter to swing in or out, as may be desired, substantially as described.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. GARKEET.
