` v.Letters Patent No. 945,266, dated September 28, 1869.
MPRO'VED WASH-BOILER TUBE. A
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the saxlne. v
To all whom it may concern: l
"Bet it known that 4I, THOMAS W. R. RAYNER, of
New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented'a new and improved Wash-Boiler Tube.
\ Figure 1 represents aY side elevation of my improved and iu operation.v
fig. l. f. y
Similar letters` indicate the same parts in both drawings. y
This invention relates to an improvedtube for a through which the water circulates, when heated, by rising aud'pouriug out" at 'the top like a fountain, and after` falling upon the` clothes `in the boiler, passes through them and re-enters theV tubeat the bottom,'the operation being continued until the clothes in the wash-boiler are thoroughly cleansed by 1 the repeated passage of the water through them.
` My improvement consists in forming a double tube, or enclosing one'tube within another, whereby the cir-v culatiou ofthe `water is rendered` more active, and the operation of washing or` cleansing the clothes is -performed much quicker'` thanwith the'ordinarylsingle 'lhis has been fully proved by experiment, 'and is the column of water so quickly while rising. Y y
The water between the inner and outer tubes has a higher temperature than the water outside of the l and, therefore,` the heat is not absorbed as rapidly from the column, of water inthe inner tube as it is from that in a single tube, acted upon directly by the lower temperature of the water outside of the tube, in the usual way. -The Water, consequently, rises quicker in the inner tube, and discharges at the top at a higher temperature, thus producing greater activity int-he circulation ofthe water, and rendering the `operation more effective.
` Another improvement -in mytube is the attachment, to the top, of `a'slidi'ng cap or valve, which remains clos'ed, and prevents theescape of steamy until the' water is hot enougli'to rise'and force the cap-up y detached from the boiler, plied to and fused with tion'.
' by small braces e e,
to discharge itself, and -therebyvgreatly' expedite the operation of washing clothes. i
My improved wash-boiler tube is made separate a'nd in order that it may `be apany common washlboiler, instead of the ordinary stationary tube `attached to a boiler, having a`perforatedfalse bottom; and for this purpose I` construct the tube with a broad or bellmouthed perforated ba'se, which sits upon the bottom of a boiler,
The tube is made of Ytin or other suitable sheetmetal,` with an external shell, A', made slightly tapering, or smaller at the upper than the lower end, in'` which external tube A is enclosed an internal tube, B, with a small space between them, secured together at top and bottorin-as shown in fig. 2. l
A On theV lower end of the tube A is aliixed thebellmouthed base C, perforated by slots aV a,.through which the water can pass for circulation.
On the top of the tube A is attached a sliding cap,
D, which closes theupper'lendwhen it is down, and
.opens it when'it is` raised, bythe water forcing itself upward, when, boiling, to discharge over among the clothes, passing down through-them and ihrcugh theV slots a a in the base C, to produce a circulation, which is maintained actively in my improved boiler-tube, by
the column of water rising through the inner tube B,
with ,loss'of heat, in its passage upward,by conduction, whichtakes'place in a single tube, as before described. i l
Having described' my invention, l v What I claim, rand desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A detached wash-boilertube,'having an internal tube, B, combined with an Aexternal tube, A, and a base, O, arranged and operating substantially as and for the .-purpose hereindescribed.
2. The sliding cap D, in combination with the tubes `A and B, arranged and operating as herein described. Witnesses:
