'EQIALL WHOM IT MAYl GONCERN:
Beit known that I, ANDREW ONEILL, of Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto, and State pf Ohio, havel invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following isv a sufciently full, clear, and exact description thereof, to enable one skilled inthe art to which my said invention appertains, to make and use it, reference bei'ng had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification.
'I'he subject of my invention is a removable inner boiler, of peculiar construction, adapted to be placed within a common boiler, and when so placed,to induce an active and forcible circulationof watery-under the action of heat. In thedrawings-f i Figurel is a central vertical section, representing my wash-,boiler applied to a boiler made under my several patents of August 22,' 1865, and February 20, 1866.
Figure 2 is 'a .planof the same partly in section. Figure 3 represents a side elevation thereof, a portion of the outer boiler being removed to expose that to whiclrmy present invention relatesf Y l Figure 4 is a vertical section, showing the invention applied ito a common agricultural kettle. Similar` letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views. i A represents an outer boiler, which may haof any common or suitable construction. B isthe inner boiler, to which my invention relates. The said innerboiler' is separate and removable from theouter boiler A, but, while in position -within the latter, is madeto it tightly by means'of an elastic or compressible gasket, C, located at any proper height. -Below the gasket O is a range of apertures, D, passing through the wall of the inner boiler B, and extending completely around the same. On the inside, the apertures Diare vsurmounted by hoods E, presented radially toward the centre; F F F represent a second range of apertures, located'near the bottom of 'the inner boiler. Deliectors G may be applied on the outside, under the apertures F, to prevent the hot water from beneath the inner boilerA entering through the saidapertures in its upward course. l
VIn some eases, I also propose to use directing-plates H, on the outside of the inner boiler, to eonduct-th'e ascending water to'the apertures D. I represents a straining-cloth, placed above the clothes to arrest any Ainsoluble matter which may have been'once removed therefrom.
The operation is as follows l The. outer'boiler A is supplied with water, and the clothesto be washed are placed in the inner boiler B. rIhe water in the bottom of the outer boiler, as it becomes het, will rise around the sides of the inner boiler, and being confined by the packing-gasket, will be forcibly driven in through the apertures D, on to thetop of the clothes or on to the straining-cloth I above them. Het water is thus constantly applied to and forced through the clothes,'and passing out through the lower apertures F, is as constantly-reheated in the bottom of the outer boiler. I i i i An inner boiler, B, constructed as above described, and provided with a gasket, O, may be placed within a common cast-iron kettle er boiler of almost any form, andby keeping the Aclothes from contact with the iron, Aprevents any danger of iron-moulding. I thus, at a trilling oost, providel means whereby a common boiler, which-is ordinarily used for other purposes, may be converted at will into an automatic wash-boiler of the most ecient character. l
The closure' effected by the gasket C, compels the ascending water to enter the boiler B through the apertutes D, and thus avoids the necessity of a cover over the whole. When my inner boiler is applied to an outer boiler with straight sides, as illustratedin figs. 1, 2, and 3, the gasket will be received by a .swage. or rib, c, to support the inner boiler, with its bottom suliiciently above that of the outer boiler to leave the necessary water-space between them. v
-The upward convergence of the annular water-space between the two boilers, imparts greater velocity to the water as it rises, and causes it to beejected'through the apertures D with great force.
By having no perforations in the bottom of the inner boiler, I prevent the reliux of ,steamand water upward through the bottom, which, in automatic boilers heretofore constructed, causes great inconvenience by throwing up the clothes, and interfering with the desired circulation of water.
I (lo not claim as new, so constructing a wash-boiler, that water will be caused to circulate in it by the application of lient, as I am aware that this is done in the Wash-boiler of M'. W. Staples, for which Letters Patent were granted, February 12, 1867, and reissued, December17, 1867, angl in some others.
Having thus described m'y invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The removable inner boiler B, provided with a packing or gasket, C, and adapted for application to an outer boiler of common construction, to constitute an automatic wash-boiler, as explained.
ANDREW ONEILL.
