IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,235, dated October Clt), 1866.

To all whom 'it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL KUNKEL, of Oregon, Holt county, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Clothes- Washing Machine, and I do hereby declare` that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifica-tion, in which- Figure l is a vertical central section of my .i invention taken in the line xav, Fig. 1; Fig. 2,

This in tention relates to a new andimproved clothes-washin g machine of that class in which a rotary motion is imparted to the clothes in order to subject them to the necessary friction and rubbing.

A represents the suds-receptacle, which may be of pail shape, and of any suitable dimensions, and having semi-spherical knobs or projections a attached toits bottom and toits sides a short distance up from its bottom.

On the top of the suds-receptacle A there is secured a rectangular frame, B, in which a horizontal shaft, O, is fitted, having a handle,V

D, at one end for the convenience of turning it. On this shaft C there is keyed a toothed wheel, E, which gears into a toothed Wheel, F, on a vertical shaft, G, the lower end of the latter being stepped at the center of the bottom of the receptacle A, and the upper end having its bea-ring in the frame B, as shown in Fig. l. The under side of the wheel F is provided with pendent arms b, which extend` entirely around the wheel.

The receptacle A is supplied with a requi= site quantity of suds and the clothes to be Washed 'placed therein. The shaft O is then turned with a continuous rotary motion in one direction, or turned first in one direction and then in the other, and the Wheel F, of course, is turned in a corresponding manner, and the arms b of said wheel communica-te the same motion to the clothes, causing the latter to be subjected to the necessary rubbing and friction to cleanse them thoroughly.

The clothes by this means will not be injured in the least, and the machine may bc operated with but a small expenditure of labor.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination and arrangement of the frame B, toothed wheel E, toothed wheel F, with pendent arms b, and tub A, with its projection a, substantially as and for thc purpose specified.

2. Tile frame B, forming the bearing for the shaft C and the upper end of the spindle G. arranged with the toothed wheel E, and Wheel F, provided with pendants b, in combination with the tub A, having studded bottom, all in the manner and for the purpose herein specilied.
