UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. I-IOUCK, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PERCOLATOR FOR COFFEE-URNS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. I-IoUoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Percolators for Coffee- Urns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in percolators for coffee urns and comprises a simple and eflicient device of this nature having various combinations and arrangements of parts which will be' hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional view showing the application of my invention to an urn. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a percolator by itself showing rings for distending the top and bottom thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view vertically through the percolator and rings, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of the percolator with the rings removed.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates an urn having an annular flange B at the inner surface thereof adapted to support the percolator. The percolator consists of a bag D, the circumferential wall of which is made of a fine stout cloth or fabric, while the bottom E is made of a cloth of coarser weave than the circumferential wall. Said bag has its upper end outwardly flared and turned into a partial roll forming an annular groove H, shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and adapted to receive a ring K, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The lower part of the bag Specification of Letters Patent.

flares outwardly, and N is a second ring of smaller diameter than the ring'H and is adapted to hold the bottom of the bag, which is formed of a coarser weave cloth than the side, taut. It will be noted that, when the percolator is adjusted in position, the upper ring II will rest upon the flange B of the percolator and form secure means for supporting the bag.
I have found from experimenting that, by having a heavy, finely woven circumferential wall to the bag, it will cause the coffee to spread out over the flat taut bottom, which latter is made of a coarse weave and thus allowing hot water to pass readily through the coffee and not run out over the sides. Said rings, it will be noted, are not fastened in any way to the bag but may be easily removed when desired.
What I claim to be new is A percolator for urns comprising, in combination with the urn having a conical shaped shell mounted therein with a laterally extending flange at its upper end bearing against the end wall of the urn, the inner surface of the urn having an annular shoulder near its top, a ring having a circumferential flange resting upon said shoulder and an inwardly turned flange at its lower end adapted to rest upon the flange at the upper end of said shell, a percolator bag, a ring engaging the upper marginal edge thereof and resting upon said inwardly turned flange, the bottom of the percolator flaring, a ring holding the same taut, the bottom of the percolator being of a coarser mesh material and the surrounding wall of a fine mesh.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN D. HOUGK. Witnesses:
R. WILSON, CHAS. G. WILLSON.
