BOX-SEAL.
Specification or" Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. t6, @209.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN J. Fernuni.
and EDMUND Mackay, citizens ot' the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough ot' Manhattan, in lthe county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bex-Seals,
of wlii-cli the following is a full, clear, and lexact specification.
Our invention relates to ireaos for sealing packages, containers or other receptacles and the saine has for its object more particularlyv to provide a simple, reliable and inexpensive device for eV ectually sealing shipping packages.
liurther, said invention has for its object to provide a sealing device which niay he readil)v and quickly attached to a package, box or receptacle in such a manner that the saine cannot be opened to obtain access to its contents without destroying said sealing dcvicc, and rendering the saine uniit for further use.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a sealing device for packages which is so constructed and arranged upon a package that a portion thereof shall be exposed and readil i observable .in order to indicate at once to a purchaser whether an)v attempt has been made to reach the contents ot said package.
Further, said invention has for its obJect to provide a sealing device t'oi' the purposes f aforesaid which shall be simple and conipact in construction, and not intertere with the ordinary use ot the package.
To the attainment ot' the aforesaid objects and ends our invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the coinbination, connection and arranigeiiient ot' parts hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a front view of a cracker box with a i sealing device constructed and embodying? our invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective of the sealing device ready to be applied to the receptacle;
Fi". 3 is an enlaroed face view of a. portion of a cracker box with the scalino device aoplied; Ii'igfsis an enlarged detail section taken on the .line 4 4 of Fig. 3; Fig.
sectional view taken on the line oi 4, looking in the direction of the arrow, and
Fig. (i is a' perspective view of the attachin member ot' the sealing device.
ln said drawings l() designates a metal cracker box or shipping package comprising a box portion 1l open at its top, and provided with a hinged cover l2 having a. depending rim or tiange 13 which is adapted to extend over and inclose the upper edges of the box portion ll, as best shown at Fig. et.
The front wall of the box portion ll is providedinear its upper edge vmidway between the side walls with an aperture into which is fitted froiiiinside the outer or forward end of a tubular member or sleeve 14C which is provided with an annular rib or flange l5 adapted to bear against the inner side of the front wall of the .box portion, and has its extreme outer end 16 turned over in oidei to clamp the material of the front Wall between said flange l5 and end 16. in the front depending part 13' of the cover l2 is provided an aperture 1i' which registers with the opening ot the tubular member or sleeve llwhen the cover l2 is, closed down upon the box portion l1.
l5 denotes the sealing device comprisin a spring member ltlfand s head 2G Secured thereto. rlhe head :2O is preferahl struckup from a piece of sheet inetai an is made circular in outline and provided 'with a peripheral rini 21. The central portion of the head is partially severed therefrom to form two substantially senti-circular sections which are then bent rearward and toward cach other to forni a round, integral, frangible section or ligament 22,
The, spring member 19 is preieraioiy t'oviiied ot' a single piece of instal of suitable resiliency and comprises two legs or prongs 95 the inner or free ends of the iegs 23- su@ v tit-ientlv to permit of the saine being passed through the aperture l?, and into the tabular member or sieeve li. fereuiicn 'the device is pushed inward until the lugs 25, 25
at the inner ends ot the legs 23, pass beltd@ yond the inner end of the sleeve 14 when the same, owin t'o their resiliency will be caused to sprea apart, and the lugs 25, 25
thereof engage the inner end of the tubular 22 bein member or slzeevelll, and thereby secure the device 1in position and lock the cover securely to theA box.
To open the box it is necessary to pry oil'- or otherwise remove the head 20 from the attaching spring-member 19, and this cannot be done without 'destroyingrthe seal, since theattaching spring-member 19 can'-Y not be separated from the head 20 without breaking the frnngible ligament 22. As soon l as the head 20 has been severed from the attaching-member 19, Athe latter` may .be pushed into -the box and the 'cover thereof opened. y It'will be obvious that as soon as the sealing device has once been brokenthe same cannot be again used owing to the ligament member carried by the frangible section on said head, and adapted to engage said recep-V tacle, substantially as s ecified.
3. A sealing device or receptacles, comprisin a head having 'a central, integral,
' rangi le section, and an attachingv member secured intermediateits ends to said frangi-l ble section, and adapted to en age said re-.
ceptacle, substantially as speci ed.
a. A sealing device for receptacles comrisino'a Hat head .having a central, integral,
.an i le section, and a resilient attaching A inem er-secured intermediate its ends to said frangible section, and adapted to engage said receptacle, substantially as specified.
5. A sealing device for receptacles, com- .risin a flat head having a central, integral, ran i le section, 'and a resilient attaching mein er comprisin a'plurality of prongs provided at their" ree ends with engaging destroyed, and `the head thereby means and secured at their connected vends tothe frangible section of said head, sub-V` V` stantially as specified.
i 6. The combination with a receptacle anda cover having an aperture there1n,"of a sealin device corn rising a sleeve secured in said receptacle, 1n register with tlie a erture 1n said cover, a head havlng ak rangi le section, and an attaching member secured to said head and adapted to extend through said aperture and sleeve and held thereby, substantially as specified. Y
7. The combination with areceptacle and a cover having an aperture therein, of al sealing device' comprisinga sleeve securedl in said receptacle in line with the aperture in said covera head having an integral, frangible section, and a resilient attaching member secured to said resilient lsection and adapted for securement in said aperture and sleeve, substantially as specified.
8. The combination with a receptacle .and a cover having an aperture therein,of a sealing device comprisin a sleeve secured at one end in said receptac e and in line with the aperture in said cover, a head having an integral frangible section, and a resilient attaching member comprisin a plurality of prongs andsecured to said rangible section at the junction of said prongs, and adapted to engage at their free ends with the inner end of said sleeve, substantially as specified.
9. rlhe combination witha receptacle and cover having an aperture therein, of a sealing device comprising a sleeve having' an annular fiange adjacent to one of its -ends and securedv to said receptacle intermediate said flange and its adjacent end, a head hav ing a central, in tegrahffrangible section, and a resilient attaching member secured intermediate itsend's to said frangible sections, r
and having a lurality of prongs adapted to extend throng said sleeve and the aperture in said cover and provided at their free ends with projections adapted to engage flieg rear end of said sleeve, substantially as speci-fied.
Signed at the cit of New York, inthe county and State ot New York, thisseventeenth day of May, nineteen hundred and seven.
