This invention relates, generally, to im' provements in that class of cases or boxes known in the art as vanityboxes, adapted to contain face-powders, rouges, cosmetics,
and thelike', and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel. and
simply constructed vanity or case, com
prising two compartments or chambers, one adapted to contain a face-powder, or the like, and the other compartment or chamberbeingadapted to contain a compact of ink or red. rouge, the case or box being ormed principally by a dividing partition or tray, and a band surrounding the marginal edge of the said partition or tray, all
bein ssecured. by hinge-member and fastening ugs, thereby providing acombined interlocked and frictionally bound'assemblage of the several elements.
The invention has for its primary object to simplify the general construction of the mainbody of the case or box, by doing away with the more or less expensive strue ture of a. main compartinentrshell, usually dj wn into shape by means of expensive machinery or dies; and, furthermore, to provide a vanity or other box or case in which all the various members: thereof are secured and positively maintained in the assembled relation, without any use of solder, or independent rivets;
The invention has for itsmfurther object to provide a vanity case or box in which the main portions of the box which provide the usual compact-receiving compartments at the device are arranged in a manner, and are of such a construction that the thickness ofrthe box has been reduced to a minimum, and? whereby an extremely. thin van- 4 ity-box is the result.
The present invention has for its further object to provide a vanity case or boxin which the covers on lids of the case are of such construction, so that the annular flange membersot the respective covers will close within orinsiide ot the band encircling the hereinbeforemmentioned'v partition; and, furthermore, the said band being in a flat condition, before assemblage in ther'formof a cylindrical box; or case, can be readily orlamented, by engradnmg, orxby its passage between suitable ornnmentedi i-olil's.

will be clearly understood from the follow? ing detailed description of the saidainyenion. I V
With the various objects of, vthe inventiop in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel vanity case or box hereinafter set forth; and, the said invention comists,, furthermore, in novel arrange mentsand combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the saidl parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally em bodied in the clauses. of the claims, which are appended to and; which form an essem one of its members, in this case the coin pact-holder, being represented in its opened relationt Figure 4. is a view of vanity case or box, partly in elevation..M partly in vertical. section, when. looking toward: the hingeconnection of the case or box. I
Figure 5 is a transversevertical sectional representation. of the main. portion-10f the vanity ease or box, looking toward the hingeconnection of the same, with. the covers or lids shown in their opened relation to the said main portion, and showing in. connection with saidcovers on lids, the cover-inserts used therewith F re 6* is avertical section, taken on line 6-6+ in said Figure 5; Figure 'Z is a similar section, taken. on line 7-4: in said Figure 6-; Figure 8 is? a horizontal sectional rep resentation oi the main bod portion of the ease or box, taken. centrally through the above-mentioned, band and, the hinge-con perspectiwe View, collectively, oi the said ban and one oi the members oi the hinge connection. 7
nection of. the device", and Figure- 9 is a i Figure l0'is1a view, Similar to-saidl Figure 8, illustrating a slightly modified construe tion of a vanity-case or box; and Figure 11 is a perspective view of the modified form of band employed in the construction of said case or box. v 7
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the herein-above mentioned partition, the same being preferably of a circular marginal configuration, bounded by a right-angled flange 2. It will be understood however, that the marginal configuration of this partition, and of the said flange 2 may be varied, and may be of any other suitable shape. At
. a suitable location the flange 2 is provided with a pair of'perforations or slits, as 3, and surrounding the said flange 2 is a band or strap 4, preferably of'the shape illustrated more particularly in Figure 9 of the drawings, the said band or strap being of such length, so that when it is arranged about the said flange 2, a hinge-plate receiving space 5 will be provided. The end-portions of the said band or strap 4, which are preferably reduced, as at 6, are provided with suitable perforations or slits 7 corresponding to and being adapted to be brought into registration with the said perforations or slits 3, as indicated in Figure 8 of the drawings.
The means for securely aflixing the said band or strap 4 about the said flange 2 is by means of a suitably shaped hinge-plate 8, see Figure 9,,said plate being placed in or directly above the space 5; and, being provided at its ends with fastening lugs or tongues 9, these lugs or tongues are suitably bent, and then insertedthrough the registering perforations or slits 7 and 3, and then firmly forced over upon the inner surfaceportion of the flange 2, substantially as shown in the several figures of the drawings. In this manner, the'said band or strap will be permanently and immovably secured to the said partition 1, and the said band or strap being of greater width than that of the flange 2, a main body-element is produced, having two compartments 10 and 11 arranged on opposite sides of the partition 1, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings. Along its marginal edges 12 and 13, the said hingeplate 8 is provided with pairs of suitably disposed pintle-receiving ears or lugs 14 and 15. Pivotally connected with one pair of said ears or lugs, as 14, by means of a correspondingl placed pintle-lug or ear 17 is a suitably flcirmed lid or cover 16, which is marginally bent, so as to provide a stop-bead, as 18, and has a marginal closing flange 19, adapted, when the lid or cover 16 is closed, to enter within the compartment 10, as indicated in Figure 4 of the drawings. As
shown more particularly in Figure 5 of the drawings, the said closing flange 19 18 cut away, the end- portions 20 and 21 being in- .wardly bent or curved end-portions will readily enter the correspondingly cut-away portion of the bandor strap 4, so as to bring the flange 19 into frictional binding engagement with the adjacent inner surface-portions of the said band or strap 4. Likewise, there is pivotally connected with the other pairof ears or lugs 15, by means of a correspondingly placed pintlelug or'ear 23, a suitably formed lid or cover 22, which is also marginally bent, so as to provide a stopbead, as 24, and has a marginal flange 25 which is adapted when the lid or cover 22 is closed, to enter within the compartment 11.
From said Figure 5, it will also be seen, that the closing flange 25 is also cut away, the end- portions 26 and 27 being inwardly bent or curved, the pintle-receiving lug or ear 23 being arranged between these inwardly bent or curved end'portions 26 and 27. In closing the lid or cover these inwardly bent or curved end-portions will readily enter the correspondingly cut-away portion of the band or strap 4, so as to bring the flange 25 into frictional binding engagement with the adjacent inner surface-portions of the said band or strap 4.
Within the said lid or cover 16 is disposed a correspondingly shaped mirror 28, suitably held in place by means of a retaining ring 29 which is forced into frictional holding engagement with the closing flange 19 of the said lid or cover 1.6, but which mirror may be otherwise secured in said lid or cover in any other suitable manner.
Referring now to Figure 6 of the drawings, it will be seen that within the other lid or cover 22 is disposed a suitably formed plate 30, preferably provided with a marginal flange 31, for forcing said plate into frictional holding engagement with the inner surface-portions of the marginal flange 25 of the said lid or cover 22, as will be evident. The said plate 30, however, may be otherwise secured within the said lid or cover. As shown, this plate 30 is made with a suitably shaped compact-receiving opening, as 32, which is partially bounded by a retaining flange 33, or other means for receiving and maintaining the usual rouge-compact in its operative position Within the said lid 01 cover 22. I
In lieu of the form of band or strap 4 illustrated in connection with Figures -1 to 9 of the drawings, this strap may be made in the form of a band 34, such as is indicated more particularly in Figures 10 and 11, the said band 34 being forced directly over the partition-member, and in this instance being marginally cut awa as at 35 and 36, and being provided wit the suit ably disposed perforations or slits 37 for the reception of the fastening lugs or tongues 9 of the bin elate 8, substantially as illustrated in sai igure 10. The construction and arrangement of the other parts of this modified form of vanity case or box is the same as that herein-above described in connection with the construction of case or box illustrated in said Figures 1' to 9, and any further description of the same is therefore deemed unnecessary.
From the foregoing description of the present invention, it will be clearly seen, that I have provided a neat and compact assemblage of the various elements comprising the vanity case or box, the said various elements being easily and quickly assembled and maintained in their assembled relation without the employment Of solder, rivets, or the like. r
Of course I am fully aware, that changes me be made in the general arrangements an combinations of the various devices and parts, as Well as in the details of the construction of the said'parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanyin drawings.
I claim 1. A vanity case comprising a partitionmember, a band marginally encircling said member, a hinge-member secured to said band, and a pair of cover-members pivotally connected with said hinge-member, said cover-members being provided with rightangled closing flanges adapted to enter into closing engagement with the inner surfaceportions of said band.
2. A vanity box comprising a partitionmember, a band marginally encircling said member, and a hinge-member carrying cover-members, all being secured by said hinge-member, so as to provide a combined- .er-members pivotally connected with said interlocked and frictionall bound assemlugs extending from said hinge-member, said lugs entering said slits for securing said hinge-member to said band, and a pair of cover-members pivotally connected with said hinge-member, said cover-members being provided with right-angled closing flanges adapted to enter into closing enga ement with the inner surface-portions of sai band.
