the same time to provide means whereby the pencils are protected from breakage while positioned in the pocket.

The invention further contemplates the provision of a device of this character which will occupy but small space; which will carry a number of pencils and which at the same time will be strong, durable and economical to produce.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which,

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a metallic plate which is of substantially rectangular formation and which is curved forwardly at its lower end as at 11 to form a bottom for engagement with the points of the pencils which are inserted in the holder. The plate 10 is provided upon its forward face with a pair of strips 12 which are secured adjacent the edges of the plate and between which the pencils are adapted to be engaged. The strips 12 are preferably formed from a flexible material such as leather or the like and serve the purpose of spacing the cover 13 from the forward face of the plate 10, to form a back or space for the reception of the pencils. The plate 10 is further provided with flexible material 16 which is composed of felt, or the like for the purpose of producing a frictional contact with the pencils.

For the purpose of retaining the holder within the pocket a spring clip 14 is provided which is of substantially U-formation and secured at its operr end to the upper edge of the plate 10 and curved outwardly and downwardly from the same. The clip 14 is of sufiicient length to engage over the cover 13 and permits of the engagement of the upper edge of the pocket between the same and the upper face of the cover, 13 whereby the holder is frictionally retained. The upper edge of the front wall of the cover 13 is cut away as at 15 for the purpose of enabling the positioning of the pencils between the cover 13 and the plate 10 without the necessity of separating the upper edges of the cover.

In employing the device .the same is inserted in the pocket and the spring clip 14 is disposed over the outer lap of the pocket engaging the same between the cli 14 and the outer wall of the cover 13 to e ectually retain the holder within the pocket. The operator now engages the pointed extremities of the pencils against the upper end of the plate 10 through the cut away portion 15 and against the strip of felt 16 when the pencil is placed in a substantially vertical position and pushed downwardly. wWhen the pencil is extended into the bottom of the holder the same is prevented from injuring the cover 13 or the pocket of the wearer, by the operation of the upturned end 11 of the plate 10 upon which the pencil points are supported.

lVith a device of this character it is readily observed that the pencils are frictionally .retained within the pocket so that the loss of the same is prevented and so that the same can only be removed upon the application of a slight pressure upon the pencil.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is;

1. A device of the character specifled, comprising a metallic plate, an upwardly and forwardly curved end carried by said plate, a cover disposed about said plate, stri s engaged adjacent the opposite edges ol said plate within said cover to space the same from said plate, said cover havin a cut away portion at its upper edge, an a strip of flexible material positioned against the inner face of said plate.

2. A pencil holder as specified, comprising a plate, an upwardly and outwardly turned portion disposed upon the lower end of said plate, a spring clip carried upon the upper end of said plate and extended forwardly and downwardly therefrom, strips positioned upon the face of said plate adjacent the opposite edges thereof, and a cover disposed about said plate.

A holder as specified, comprising' a plate, having an upturned lower edge, a cover disposed about said plate, strips positioned upon said plate adjacent the opposite edges of the saine, and a spring clip mounted upon the upper end of said plate and curved forwardly and downwardly for engagement against the outer flap of a pocket.
