(ModeL) I Gr.L. KNOX.
RULBR. No. 261,729. Patented July 25, 1882.
WITNESSES I INVEI ITOR I I BY Mm; 4 1: 5 W ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. KNOX, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
RULER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110.261,?29, dated July 25, 1882.
' Application filed April 11, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE I1. KNOX, 'of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Rulers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of the special means employed for holding the strip of absorbent material, consisting of a bent or folded plate' of sheet metal adapted to be placed in a deep slot or groove made in the edge of the ruler.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective. view of my improved ruler, and Fig. 2 is a crosssectional elevation of the same.
A represents a ruler of ordinary construction, except that it is formed with the deep slot or groove a in one edge; and B represents the bent or folded plate of sheet metal, placed in the slot on and extending the whole length of the ruler. In this bent or folded plate is placed the strip 0, of blotting-paper or other absorbent material, the outer edge of which reaches near to the outer lip or edge, 0, of the ruler, as'shown in the drawings.
The bent'plate B may be of any kind of sheet metal, but should have some elasticity, sothat when removed from the slota the sides of the plate will open slightly for the easy insertion of the strip 0, and when placedin the groove or gutter a the sides will act as spring clamps against the walls of the groove or gutter for clamping the strip 0 and for holding the plate securely in place in the gutter or groove. By this means the plate B will be held firmly in the ruler, and may be removed at pleasure for renewing the strip 0, and for adjusting the edge thereof the proper distance from the edge 0 of the ruler for absorbing all ink that may pass from the pen to the ruler, and effectually prevent the same from running down and getting upon the paper being ruled.
I do not confine myself to this or any means of holding the strip of absorbent material, C, as it might be simply placed in the groove or guttera or attached to or held by various other means; but the means shown and described are preferred, since they are at once efficient, convenient, and cheap.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is-
The ruler A, formed with the gutter or groove a, in combination with the strip 0 of absorbent material and the bent plate B, substan tially as described.
GEORGE L. KNOX.
