THE NORRIS PETERS 00., WASHINEION, n. 1:
LOT W. PRICE, OF WHITTEN, IOWA.
I COMMODE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Application filed March 2, 1906. Serial No. 303,889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lor W. PRICE, citizen of the United States, residing at Whitten, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Commodes, of which the fol owing is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of commode which is hygienic or sanitary in character and which may be so arranged that it may be conveniently used by children of different ages and adults.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a transverse section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the casing of the commode, pro? vided with a top 2 in which an opening 3 is out, said opening being of the size and shape usually employed in devices of this character for adults. In connection with the opening 3, I provide an auxiliary seat 4 for children, said seat being preferably a crescent shaped structure provided with an opening 5 smaller than the opening 3 and designed to rest on the top 2 of the casing 1 over the main opening 3. Preferably a cylinder 6,
rovided with an outwardly flared rim 7, is interposed between the seat 4 and the walls of the opening 3 and rests against the latter with its outwardly flared rim, being secured thereto by any suitable means in a detachable manner. This means in the present instance consists of a turn button 8. The purpose of the cylinder 6 is to provide a convenient support for the auxiliary seat 4 and also to extend down through the opening 8 into the casing 1 so as to serve as a direct funnel for the defecated matter. The top 2 is provided with a hinged lid 9 which is preferably formed with a stop 10 to limit its backward or opening movement. The'interior of the casing is provided at opposite sides with hooks 11, and hangers, preferably in the form of chains 12, are secured to said hooks and diverge downwardly therefrom and are secured to eyes 13 at the four corners of a shelf or support 14. This shelf is intended to support a suitable vessel and it is adjustably held by means of the chains or similar devices, any links of which may be engaged with the hooks to change the elevation of the shelf, so that vessels of different heights may be conveniently supported thereon in proper position to the seat opening 3. The shelf 14 may be entirely detached or removed if desired, in the event the vessel is of a size to rest on the bottom 15 of the casing 1. The front opening of the casing 1 is closed by a hinged door 16 having a suitable thumb catch 17 thereon.
The door 16 is provided with two openings designed to receive dowel pins 19 projected from one edge of a detachable step 20. The said step is provided with detachable connecting devices in the form of pivoted hooks 21 secured to its upper face and designed to engage loops or screw eyes 22 secured in the front face of the door. By this means a step is provided for childrens use, and when not desired may be removed, as is manifest. Also preferably for childrenfs use, two struts 23 are swiveled by screw eye connection to opposite sides of the casing 1 and are intended to be thrown outward into engagement with the floor in front of the casing so as to support the same and prevent it from tipping over by the weight of a child getting upon the step of the door. These struts may be thrown up out of the way and rest against any suitable form of stops 24 secured to the sides of the casing l.
It is to be understood that the casing may be provided with arm rests or not, according to the taste or fancy of the manufacturer, that the casing and arts may be made of any metal or materia desired, and that they may be ornamented and embellished in any From the foregoing description and in accordance with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a simple construction of commode which can be arranged readily for either childrens use or adults use and provided with detachable auxiliary seats and a foot rest that can be conveniently attached to the hinged door of the casing so that a childs feet may rest comfortably thereon when using the seat.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The herein described portable commode, consisting of a casing having its front closed by means of a hinged door, and having a flared opening in its top, and having arm rests and a hinged lid closing the said opening, a detachable step fitted to the door, a vertically adjustable shelf arranged Within the casing, a cylinder having its up er end provided with a flared rim fitted wit iin the I aforesaid flared opening in the top of the casing to hold the cylinder suspended within I the said opening and a crescent shaped auxiliary seat fitted within the flared rim of the cylinder to come flush with the top of the casing and admit of the lid fitting close thereto.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
