INIPROVED SHAFT-SUPPORT.

The Schedule referred to in these Lem-.ers Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, R. O. BRACKETT and D. NV. BRACKETT, of Vineland, in the county of Cumberland, aud State of New Jersey, have inventeda new and iinproved Shait-Support; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the alt to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ci' this specification.

'lhe object of this invention is to provide a simple and eifective attachment for such harness as is designed for shaft vehicles, as buggies, sulkies, and chaises.

It is an improved substitute for the ordinary leather loops, or strap, forming part or attached to the straps of the harness-saddle.

These loops, heretofbre made oi' leather, become rapidly worn by the friction of the shafts within them, and asa consequence require frequent repair.

Our invention consists ofy two parts of any suitable rigid material, as metal, wood, or gutta-percha, aud so formed that when brought together and united, a rigid eye, or loop, will be formed, in which the `shaft is inserted, as in the case of the common leather loop. v

The two parts oi' our rigid loop are a'xed together by screws, or other analogous device, and the buckle `and buckle-strap i'or the belly-band are held between the proximate surfaces of the two parts of thc said loop, as will be better understood by reference to the drawing, which represents a longitudinal section of our invention, and in which A and B are the two parts, each having a tapered extension, a and b, respectively, between the proximate surfaces of which the buckle-,strap G of the bellyband is clamped.

1) is the buckle for attaching the loop A B to the saddle-strap. i

This buckle is preferably attached by enclosing its bar c within the hole formed by suitable recesses in the proximate surfaces of the parts A and B, which recesses, when brought together, constitute a hole for the bar c.

A longitudinal recess, f, permits the proper play of the tongue of the buckle.

The proximate surfaces of the extensions a b are corrugated, or provided with short pointed studs, aspcrities, or teeth, to sink int-o the strap C, and assist in holding it firmly.

The buckle D may be attached in any suitable manucr.

Having thus described our invention,

We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The shaft-support, consisting of the rigid parts A B,`exteuded at a b, to clasp the ,strap O, recessed atf for the buckle D, and secured firmly together by the screws el d, as herein shown and described for the purpose specified.
