IMPROVEMENT lN HARNESS-SADDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,137, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VILLIAu LEONARD and WILLIAM E. LEONARD, both oi' Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts,
.have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Saddles, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists in so arranging and combining a back-strap holding metal piece with a stiiIening-plate that, by means of the turret at the upper end and a rivet on the lower end of the back-strap piece, all the parts are held together without any other additional fastening.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improvement, the turret and jockey being' removed from its bearing and thrown upward. Fi g. 2 is asimilar view of the back of the same; and Fig. 3 is a section in line x m, Fig. l.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several gures.
A in the drawing represents the usual iron saddle proper, provided with wings A', which have longitudinal inward depressions for the stiffening to rest in. B is one of the saddle-naps, secured to its wing A' by means of rivets or clinched nails a. At its upper end this strap B is provided with two cuts, so that a central portion, b, thus formed may lie on the metal stiffening-plate C and be in the recess thus formed a protection against the rubbing of the stiffeningplate C against the upper end d of the metal piece D, which also iits into that recess. This end d is provided with an elongated square slot, into which fits a similarly-shaped leatherpnut, c, through which the screw end of the turret E passes. The wing Al has in its recess a slot to correspond with the slot of end d of piece D, a-nd through which and a suitable opening in the stiffening-plate the shankf of a screw-nut, F, passes, which latter serves for a bearing into which to screw the lower end of turret E, and thus hold all the pieces firmly together. G is a jockey secured to the saddle proper, through which turret E passes, and which covers and hides the upper portion of a saddle-strap, B, and the parts below where they are secured together. On the inner side, at the lower end of metal piece D, is formed a rivet, Il', which passes through strap B and stiifening-plate O, on which latter it is riveted. In this manner the stiffening-plate C serves also to hold the lower end of piece D with the loop g, to which the back-strap H is fastened, while the turret holds all the parts together at the ripper end.
By means of our improvement a harness-sadi y by Letters Patent, is-
The back-strap holding-piece D, with its slotted upper portion d and rivet d at its lower portion, and the stiifening-plate C, when arranged as described and shown7 to hold all the parts together by means of the turret E and screw-nut F at the upper and by means of rivet d at the lower end, without other fastenin g, substantially as described.
