Be it known that I, OWEN L. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End Pieces for Galleys, of which the "following is a specification.
My invention relates to the art of galleys as designed for use with type-setting machines, and especially with those commonly known as mono-type machines. In the use of this type of machines, it is the common practice to shift the work from one galley to another, this act being necessitated by the fact that the work is fed to the galley by the machine in inverse position and must of necessity be reversed before it can be used.
Theobject of my invention is to provide a simple and practie al means whereby the fore going defects are obviated, thus saving a great deal of time heretofore lost in the transfer of the work from galley to galley, and also lessening the possibility of disarrangement thereof.
To this end my invention comprehends the use of an open-ended galley and the provision of a suitable removable end piece therefor, whereby after filling the galley in the usual manner, it is only necessary to turn it about end for end and by simply removing the end piece to the opposite end the work may be proceeded with on the same galley and in precisely the same manner as is ordinarily done on the duplicate galley.
The specific details of construction whereby my invention may be carried out may of course be varied in unessential particulars without departing from the spirit thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings whereon similar parts are indicated by similar reference characters, and in which Figure 1 is a general perspective View of a galley, partly broken away, and showing one form of my invention in operative relation therewith; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the same, with one portion of the end piece broken away to disclose the interior construction; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but of another embodiment of my invention, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the end piece shown in Fig. 3.
With particular reference to the device shown in the first two figures, the galley A is constructed with the bottom 10 formed integral with the side walls 11 and of the same length. At any convenient place the end of each side wall is provided with a notch, in this instance such feature being shown as a socket 12 and having an inclined surface 13 leading thereto substantially midway of the inner vertical edge thereof.
The end piece B comprises a rigid body portion 14 adapted to lie snugly within the open end of the galley and in contact with the side walls as well as upon the bottom thereof. Each end of the body portion is provided with an enlargement and has a longitudinal bore 15 extending from the outer end forniing a cavity in which is mounted a catch or plunger 16 having a nose 17- adapted to register with the aforesaid notch, whereby the end piece is interlocked with the end of the galley. The stem 18 of the plunger projects through an extension 19 of the bore 15 and is provided at its inner end with any suitable thumb piece 20 whereby the plunger may be manipulated and the end piece unlocked from the galley. The thumb piece shown herein is segmental in contour and the plunger stem is tapped into it in assembling, and which process is facilitated by the fact that the straight side of the segmentlies in proximity to the body of the end piece. The thumb pieces being near each other, and arranged in the space between the end enlargements of the member 14, their operation towards each other is quite convenient. A simple coil spring 21 surrounds the plunger stem where by it is normal ly retained in locking position. Said plunger is prevented from outward displacement by a key 22 passing through the said stem as indicated. The mechanism of the plungers being the same for both ends of the body of the end piece, the foregoing description of one will be understood. as being applicable to both. It will also be obvious that whatever specific structure of interlocking means may be employed, the same must be uniform at both ends of the galley for the purpose of easy interchange of the end piece from one end to the other. At each end of the body portion of the end piece I secure by any convenient means or integral therewith a clip 23 which is co-extensive vertically with said body portion and which extends around the end of the side wall, and constituting with said body portion effective means whereby the said wall is braced from all tendency to lateral distortion in either direction.
By reason of the fact that the catches 16 have a ositive interlocking connection with the gal ey in the peculiar manner hereinbefore described, it will be apparent that the end piece B cannot be accidentally displaced, and it is necessary to manipulate the thumb pieces 20 before said catches can be disengaged from the galley walls and the end piece detached.
The form of my invention disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4 is in its essential characteristics very similar to that above specified, and comprehends an end piece C having a rigid body portion 14 to which is secured in any convenient manner at each end thereof a clip 23 which embraces the end of the side wall as in the previous instance, and, cooperating with the body portion which latter rests upon the bottom of the galley 10 and snugly against the side wall 11, forms effective bracing means for said wall in both directions. In this form the locking notch 12 is formed vertically in the end of the side wall 11 and is so positioned as to receive therein the catch 17, shown as a feature of the slip 23.
From the foregoing description, the construction of my device will be readily appar ent to any one skilled in the art to which it appertains, and in brief the operation is as follows: The end piece being in place in one end of the galley, the work is fed thereto and against the end piece in the usual manner. When the galley is filled, it is only necessary to simply remove said end piece to the opposite end of the galley, and the further steps are proceeded with in the same manner as has heretofore been done by using an additional galley.
It will be obvious that my invention contemplates the use of a galley having only one open end. The work in such case being fed last line first to and against the solid end, and after the galley is filled in the usual manner, it is only necessary to apply my remov able end piece, closing the said open end, and against which the work may be moved for the further operations, and without the ne cessity of employing a duplicate galley.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In combination, a printers galley comprising a bottom and side walls, an end-piece for closing an end of said galley and having its body resting upon the bottom thereof and snugly fitting between the side walls aforesaid, the opposite ends of the end piece having clips extending outwardly therefrom and against the adjacent vertical end edges of the side walls of the galley, said clips being bent laterally against the outer sides of the side walls and thereby reinforcing the walls against outward strain, a catch being located at each end of the end piece and in detachable interlocking engagement with a side wall of the galley.
2. In combination, a printers galley com prising a bottom and side walls, a detachable end piece for closing an end of the galley and consisting of a body resting upon the bottom of the galley between the side walls thereof and having enlargements at its opposite ends, spaced from each other, catches slidably mounted in the enlargements of the body, springs also mounted in the said enlargements and bearing against the catches to normally hold the same in interlocking engagement with the walls of the galley, and thumb-pieces connected to the catches and arranged in the space between the enlargements of the body and movable towards each other in such space to disengage the catches from the galley in detaching the end-piece.
3. As an article of manufacture, a detachable end piece for galleys comprising a rigid body portion having end enlargements between which a recess is provided, said enlargements having longitudinal bores, a spring-operated locking plunger in each of the bores, the said plungers being in alinement with each other and with their adjacent ends extended into the aforesaid recess, thumb pieces secured upon said plunger ends and lying within the outlines of said body, and a clip on each of said enlargements, substantially as described.
4. A printers galley provided with a base plate having open ends, a pair of fixed side rails, a removable and transposable end rail, and a spring bolt carried by the end rail and adapted to interlock with either end of the side rails.
