IRA D. CARTER, OF WLSON, 'NEW YORK.
Lezers Patent No. 86,280, daad .Tama/ry 2o, 1869.
IM'PROVED/IENT 1N FENCE.
To all whom it 'ma/y cmwe'm': Y n
Be it known that I, RA D. CARTER, of Wilson, in .the county of Niagara, and in the State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a portable, self-supporting fence; and in order to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the saine, will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, showing two panelsoi` the fence'connected together, and
Figure 2 shows the two panels detached.
A and B represent two panels of a board fence, made of any suitable size.
The top board a, of the panel A, extends beyond the ends of the boards immediately below, and is', near its projecting end, cut ont from the upper edge with an inclined notch, c, extending half the width of the board.
The notch c corresponds with a similar inclined notch, c', cut from the lower edge of the prjecting end oi the top board b of the other panel B.
The'bottorn board a of the panel A, which also projects beyond the ends of the other boards, is out so as to forni a tongue, d, which ts into a slot, cZ, on the projecting end of the lowest board b' in the panel B.
The panels A and B' are now put together at a proper angle, and the board b, by means of its notch c', placed in the notch c on the board a', and the tongue d, on the board a', inserted in the slot d of the board b. The panels A'and Bare placed on the ground, and braced, by means of the cross-pieceG, the ends of which are cut, as shown in iig. l, and t in notches on the bottom bars a and b.
The other end of the top and bottom boards, in the panels A and B, should be cut in the saine Inanner as already described of` the ends that join each other, and fastened in saine manner to the succeeding panels, when a zigzag fence is obtained, which can be easily taken down, and removed; but, when once properly put off, it will be just as steady as any fence inserted in the ground.
Having thus fully described iny invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is-
The brace C, notched at cach end in the forni shown, and used in combinationwiththe fence-sections A B, whose top and bottom panels are notched and tenoned, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the ibregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 24th day of November, 1868. Witnesses: IRA D.- CARTER.
