UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. OTT, OF .TOPLIN, MISSOURI.
ATTACHMENT FOR DOORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. O'r'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at .Toplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improve ments in doors and has relation more particularly to an attachment therefor. f
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel device which will prevent flies or other insects from entering when the door is being opened. Primarily it is the intention to apply this attachment to a screen door and it is to be understood that it will operate with equal facility upon a door of any ordinary or preferred construction or can be employed upon any movable structure. The attachment will furthermore operate as a door closer and when so employed the brushes may be removed, or if desired, the roller may be reduced in length and employed simply as a door operating device.
Furthermore, an object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described, which will prove efficient and satisfactory in use as well as economical to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1, is a view in elevation illustrating the invention attached to the door to which it is applied being shown in fragment. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section of an end of the device unattached.
In the drawings 1, indicates a door having near its upper free corner a perforation 2, in which is rotatably mounted a pulley 3, said pulley being held in position by the shaft 4. Secured to the upper and lower portions of the door adjacent the free corners thereof are the brackets 5, in which are mounted the supporting Specification of Letters Patent.

lugs or trunnions 6, of the wood or metal roller 7, said roller extending longitudinally of the door or parallel with the outer end, and being adjacent thereto. This roller is provided with a spiral brush which may be of any desired material, it being found in practice to operate with equal facility should the brush be of bristles, feathers, hemp, or cloth.
The upper end of the roller is provided with a suitable drum 8, around which is wound a cord or other flexible connection 9, the free end of this connection being secured to an eyelet 10, which is attached to the jamb of the door. This connection passes around the pulley S, of the door 1. It should here be stated that the roller or the drum thereon is positioned between the free edge of the door and the roller.
When the door is opened the flexible connection 9, will cause the roller to rapidly rotate and the brush thereon will prevent any flies or other insects that have congregated upon the door from entering through the door-way, as this roller will present an effective ob-.
struction which will have a tendency to drive the flies or insects off. When the door is being closed, the roller is rotated in an opposite direction through the medium of the spring 11, which is secured within the roller as in the well known curtain pole construction. As this forms no essential feature of the invention and is so obvious in the trade and arts, a detail is believed unnecessary, it being illustrated in detail in Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination, a swinging door having a perforation adjacent its upper edge, a roller mounted in the perforation. a roller under tension mounted along an edge of the door, and a flexible connection embracing the second named roller and passing; through the aperture of the door engaging the first named roller and secured to a point stationary with relation to the door, said securing point being in advance of the .second named roller.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 14th day of February, 1907.
SAMIUEL A. OTT.
