PATENT OFFICE.
I/VILLIAM B. LEE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF NINE-TWEN- TIETHS TO WILLIAM H. MILLER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
WINDOW OR DOOR SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,833, dated June 20, 1905.
Application filed June 27, 1904. Serial No. 214,4=0'7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Window or Door Screen, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to screens for doors or windows, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which in practice will normally remain in closed position for effectually closing the window or doorway and one which may be readily moved to open position and will when released return automatically to its normal position.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating the device applied to a window. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line. 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the screen in normal closed position. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the screen open.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a window, 2 its frame or casing, and 3 my improved screen applied for normally closing the lower portion of the casing, these parts, with the exception of the screen, being of the usual or any preferred construction and material.
The screen 3, constituting the subject of the invention, comprises a sheet of wire-netting or other appropriate reticulated flexible material cut to the suitable size and having its longitudinal side edges attached in any preferred manner to the side bars or stiles 4 of the screen-frame, the stiles being in turn connected at their ends by means of end rails or members 5, preferably consisting of suitable lengths of comparatively thin spring metal constituting leaf-springs, the ends of which are riveted or otherwise secured to the ends of secured in position within and to the windowcasing, while the other stile has attached thereto a finger-piece 8, adapted to be grasped for opening the screen.
In practice the screen, which is normally flat, remains in closed position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, being ,maintained in said position through the action of the leaf-springs 5, which, however, will readily yield to permit opening of the screen, as shown in Fig. 3, attention being directed to the fact that upon release of the screen the springs will serve to automatically return the same to closed position.
From the foregoing it is apparentthat I produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device which in practice will efliciently perform its functions to the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without-departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, while the device is illustrated and described herein as a windowscreen it obviously can by mere changes in the proportions of the parts be adapted for use as a screen-door, which I consider within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A normally fiat screen-frame consisting of two rigid stiles, and springs connecting said stiles; one of said stiles being permanently provided with attaching means whereby it may be secured immovably in position leaving the other stile free for movement.
2. A normally flat screen-frame consisting of two rigid stiles and a plurality of springs connecting said stiles; angle-clips connected with one stile, permanent supporting means for said angle-clips, and a finger-piece upon the opposite stile.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. LEE.
