UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BARKHEIMER, OF DES MOINES, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE KINNEY, ANDREW A. OHESNUT, AND WM. L. O. CLARK, OF SAME PLACE,
ONE-FOURTH TO EACH.
SCREEN-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,680, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed November 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osEPH BARKHEIMER,
of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a Storm-Door and Movable Screen Combined, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to prevent wind, dust, and flying insects from entering a building through an open passage-way.
Heretofore storm-doors have been placed outside of the door of a building in such a manner that one of the contiguous doors could remain closed while the other was open, and persons passin gv could, by carefully closing one door before opening the other, accomplish the results contemplated but it frequently occurs that two doors so placed are both open at the same time, and consequently fail to produce the desired results.
I have therefore combined a movable screen and a storm-door in such a manner that the screen will be automatically operated by the movements of the storm-door to close the passage-way when the door is opened and to open the same when the door is closed, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 of my drawings is a plan view of my storm-door and movable screen combined, in which a represents the doorway leading to the interior of a hall or room of a building. I) is a vestibule formed against the outside of the building to inclose the doorway a. c c are the side walls of the vestibule. d is a stormdoor hinged to the front side of the Walls of the vestibule I). f is a roller journaled over the doorway a by means of bearings attached to the wall of the building or the side walls of the vestibule, to support and move a flexible screen. It is a cord fixed to the top portion of the free edge of the door 01, and also to the end of the roller f, in such a manner that it will wind upon the roller when the door is closed and unwind and lengthen when the door is opened. It is a corresponding cord fixed to the opposite end of the roller, and extended over a directing-pulley, m, to support an operatingweight that is attached to its end.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the stormdoor d open, the operating-weight up, and the movable screen 9 down, as required to close the doorway a.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the storm-door partly open and the movable screen proportionately lowered over the open doorway.
In the practical operation of my invention, thus constructed and applied, the hinged door of the building may be removed or fastened back, so as to leave the passage-waya open to be curtained by the movable screen 9. When the storm-door d is approached from the outside and opened outward, the cord h, wound upon the end of the roller f, unwinds and rotates the roller inward, to allow the screen g to descend therefrom, as required, to close the doorway to. The same movement also winds the cord it upon the opposite end of the roller in an opposite direction, and thereby shortens it and elevates the weight attached to its free end. When the operator has passed into the vestibule and relaxes his hold from the stormdoor the gravitating force of the weight on the end of the cord It causes a reverse movement of all the parts, and as the storm-door closes behind him the screen before him is simultaneously and instantly elevated, and he can pass into the building through the unobstructed passage or doorway a, while the storm-door is closed to prevent wind, dust, or flying insects from following.
I claim l. The hinged door 01 and a movable screen, 9, arranged and combined with a doorway, a, and a vestibule, b c c, to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with the doorway a of a building, the vestibule b c 0, having a hinged door, d, the roller f, the screen or curtain g, the operating-cords h and 7a, the pulley m, and a weight, substantially as shown and described, for the purposes specified.

Witnesses W. G. HARRISON, W. L. (J. CLARK.
