ROY J. COOK AND HILLMAN H. HARVEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GRAIN-CAR DOOR.
Application filed March 8, 1906. Serial No. 304,825.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, ROY J. COOK and HILLMAN H. HARvEY, citizens of the United States, residing inl Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain-Car Doors, of which the following is a speciiication.
Our invention relates to improvements in doors for grain-cars.
The obj ect of our invention is to provide a grain-car door of a silnple, eflicient, strong,
Vemploy to practically accomplish this object and durable construction capable of being easily and conveniently released or opened. Our invention consists vin the means We or result-that is to-say, it consists, in connection with the main' door upon which our lrelease or supplemental door is ordinarily mounted having an opening to receive the release-door and provided with strips or keepers at the ends thereof adapted to engage and hold the outer ends of the release-door in place, while permitting them to move toward each other to free themselves from such overhanging strips or keepers, of a releasedoor comprising two sections or members hinged together at their meeting ends and connected at their upper edges by sliding two-way hinges to the main door, one of the hinged sections of the release-door having an outer projecting handle member overlapping the hinge connecting the two sections and the other section being provided with a fastening and releasing device engaging said projecting handle member, whereby whenr the handle member is unfastened or released `the two sections of the release-door may` swing outward at their middle until the opposite ends are withdrawn or retracted from the strips or' keepers on the main door, and then the release-door may be swung upward against the main door or part upon which it is mounted, the two-way hinge which connects the release-door with the y main door permitting first the outward or 5 in shown and described.`
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this Speciiication, Figure lis a side elevation of a grain-car door embodying our invention andshowing a portion of the car to which it is applied. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in vertical longitudinal section and showing the door in elevation from the inside. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal detail section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the grain-door partly opened and its opposite ends almost retracted or withdrawn from the strips orkeepers on the main door. gig. 5 is a detail vertical section on line 5 5 of In the drawings, Arepresents a vortion of a grain-car having an opening therein yclosed by the main door B, which is or may be of any suitable or desired construction known to those skilled in the art. The door is preferably a vertically -sliding and inwardly-swinging one, moving up and down on the guides or rods B and having metallic guides or loops b attached to the door to engage the rods B.
The main door B has an opening C therein, which is closed' by the supplemental or release door D, and the main door is also .provided with guide strips or keepers B2, which overlap and engage the ends of the releasedoor when the-same is closed and'hold the same in position.
The release-door D 'comprises two hinge sections or members d d, connected together at their meeting ends by a hinge d', the axis or pintle d2 of which is upright. The sections or membersd d are preferably made of equal lengths, so that the hinge d will come at the middle of the release-door, although the sections may be made of unequal length, if desired. Each of the sections d ofthe release-door is hinged at its upper edge and near its outer end to the main door B by a two-way hinge F, preferably comprising a pin or bolt f, having an upright arm f iitting in a strapfz, secured to the main door, and a horizontal arm f3, iitting in the hinge-strap f4, secured to the grain-door section d, the strap f4 being adapted to slide on the arm f3 to accommodate the two-way swinging movements-of the door-section. The rightangle hinge-bolt f has at one end a head f5 and at its other or horizontal end a washer Patented Jan. 8, 1907. v

jecting beyond the hinge d d2, which connects the meeting ends of the door-sections d yd. This handle member d3 is furnished with a handle d4 and with a slot d5' to receive the fastening and releasing device d, which is secured `to thefother or companion door-section d, this releasing device consisting, preierably, oi a bolt with a right-angle arm or handle d2 for turning the same.
In operation, the door being` in its closed position, .as represented in Figs. l and 3, the lfastening or releasing device d is simply :turned to bring its arm (Z7 parallel with the :slot di in the handle member d3 and then lthe pressure of the grain against the door from the `inside swings the door outward, .the .two sections d d turning on the hinge, which connects their meeting ends, and also on the upright arms of the hinge F, which .connects the release-door with the main door, the release-door being thus pushed or pulled outward until its opposite .ends are retracted or withdrawn from the keepers, flanges, or strips B2 on the main door, the hinge-straps f4 sliding on the hori- .zontal arm f 2 of the two-way hinge to permit this, and then the release-door may be swung vertically `upward against the main door, the sliding of the members of the two-way hinges F F then permitting the two sections of the release-door to resume their normal or straight position.
The release-door D serves when opened to relieve vthe pressure of the grain against the main door or grain-door pro-per, B, and thus enables it to be easily and convenientl)7 raised. At the same :time by our novel construction and combination of parts the release-door is firmly and securely held in its .closed position and can also be very easily released 'by simply turning the fastener (ZG.
l. ln .a grain-car door, the combination with the main door, having an opening to receive a release or supplemental door, and provided with guide strips or keepers therefor, of a release or supplemental door comprising two sections hinged together at their meeting ends7 two-way hinges having sliding members connecting said release or supplemental door with the main door, one of the :sections of 'the release or supplemental door being provided with a projecting or overlapping member, and the other with a rastening and releasing .device engaging said l-overlapping or projecting member, substantially as specilied. l
