PATENT OFFICE.
LUCIAN M. ALBRIGHT, OF KINGWOOD, WEST VIRGINIA.
DOOR-CLOSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,991, dated September 1, 1903.
Application filed March 25, 1903. Serial No. 149,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUOIAN M. ALBRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingwood, in the county of Preston and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Closers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door-closers, the object of the invention being to provide means for automatically closing sliding doors, windows, and the like after the same have been opened and by simply releasing such door or window.
It is also an object of this invention to arrange the door-operating device so that it will be effectually concealed within the casing of the door, window, or other sliding element in connection with which it is used.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, showing a sliding door and a portion of the casing, the latter being in section and showing the dooroperating device. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection through the lower portion of the door and casing, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the rack-plate.
Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a sliding door or window; 2, the upper portion of the casing thereof, and 3 the lower portion of such casing, the casing being provided with suitable stops or guide strips 5, between which the door or window slides.
In carrying out the present invention a rack-plate 6 is secured to the lower edge of the door or window 1, the same being in the form of a metal strip provided with a longitudinal series of openings or notches 7, with which the teeth of the tension-wheel engage.
The casing 3 is mortised out, as shown at of the spring is suitably connected to the casing, as shown at 11. The arbor 10 is journaled at its opposite ends in the pendent arms 12 of a bracket 13, mounted within the upper portion of the mortise 8, the body of the bracket being provided with an opening 14, through which the upper portion of a toothed wheel 15 operates, said toothed wheel being fast on the arbor 10, to which the spring 9 is connected. The location of the toothed wheel is such that the teeth 16 thereof project through the bearingbracket 13 and engage in the notches or openings 7 of the rackplate.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that when the door or Window is slid backward to open the same the rackplate 6 engages and rotates the toothed wheel 15, and thereby winds up the spring 9. The door or window may be held open by any suitable detent andwhen released the tension of the spring 9 is exerted to rotate the shaft or arbor 10,causing the toothed Wheel15,through the medium of the rack-plate-G, to close the door or window. The closing device may be arranged either beneath or above the window and does away with the use of weights.
Having thus described. myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a sliding closure and a frame therefor, of a rack-plate secured to one edge of the closure and consisting of a plate having a series of longitudinally-alined openings therethrough, a toothed Wheel rotatably mounted in the frame and projecting through a part of the latter to engage said rack-plate, and a spring cooperating with said toothed wheel, the said spring being wound when the closure is moved in one direction and operating to automatically return the closure in the opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUOIAN M. ALBRIGHT.
