Description

C. ELLIS.
EXTENSION WINDOW SCREEN LOCKER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 22. 1915. 1 ,1 96,%?/. Patented Aug. 29,1916.

c u a r o m IHL NORRL; IJEIERS r w il l f t CLAUDE ELLIS, OF SPRINGVILLE, NEW YORK.
EXTENSION-WINDOW-SCREEN LOCKER.
Application filed September 22, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE ELLIS, of Springville, Erie county, New York, United States of America, have invented a new and useful device for the purpose of locking the ordinary extension window-screen of commerce so that the screen cannot be shut together and removed from the window without raising the window and at the same time the device does not interfere with shutting the screen together when the locking device is not in operation. It cannot be interfered with from the outside of the window nor from the inside of the window without raising the window.
I accomplish the purpose outlined above by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The device consists of a hinge, both leaves of which are preferably of the same width as the top of the screen frame. One leaf is of ordinary construction with holes for screws. The other leaf is either much thicker than the first mentioned leaf or bent so as to serve the same purpose as a thick ened leaf. The device is susceptible of being constructed in several different ways, each of which embodies practically the same mechanical principle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows in per spcctive an ordinary extension window screen with one type of the device in question attached to the screen and in operation. Fig. 2 shows in perspective the device used in Fig. 1, by itself, unattached to a screen. Fig. 3 shows in perspective another type of the device attached to an ordinary extension window screen and in operation. Fig. 4 shows in perspective the type of device used in Fig. 3, unattached to a screen. Fig. 5 shows in perspective the same type of device appearing in Fig. 1 but involves different construction, inasmuch as it embodies a substitution for the thickened leaf of the hinge.
Referring to Figs. 1-4:, 4 represents the locking device and 3 represents the thickened leaf.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 3, 1 represents the section of an ordinary extension window screen which is to be used farthest out of doors and 2 represents the section of the screen which is to be used nearest indoors.
Referring to Fig. 5, 4 represents the locking device and 5 represents a substitution for the thickened leaf of the hinge.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1.916.
Serial No. 52,062.
In the type of device shown at Fig. 2, one leaf of the hinge is of ordinary construction with holes for screws, and the other leaf is much the thicker of the two, the additional thickness of the thicker leaf being entirely upon the inside of one of the leaves of the hinge. The thicker leaf of this hinge in this type of device may be of wood and metal, as shown at Fig. 2, or entirely of metal, or one of the leaves of the hinge bent so as to serve the same purpose as a solid, as 5 in Fig. 5.
Referring to Fig. 1, when the type of device shown at Fig. 2 is used, the screen having been placed in a window space with its ends extending into the sash guideways of the window casing, the thin leaf of the device is fastened to the indoor side of the longitudinal rail of the frame of screen section 1, as shown at Fig. 1, so that the thickened leaf of the device will block the end of the frame of screen section 2, thereby preventing the closing of the screen. It will be impossible to interfere with this look, either from the inside or outside, as long as the window is down. Upon raising the window, the thickened leaf 3 can be swung up out of range of the frame of screen section 2 and the screen sections shoved together.
Fig. 4 shows a slightly different type of device. The device shown at Fig. l consists of a hinge, one leaf of which is thicker than the other. The additional thickness, however, of the thicker leaf in device 4, shown at Fig. 4c, is entirely upon the outside of one of the leaves of the hinge and the other leaf of the hinge is of ordinary construction with holes for screws. The thickened leaf of the hinge in this type of device may be of wood and metal, as shown at Fig. i, or entirely of metal, or one of the leaves of the hinge may be bent so as to serve the same purpose as a solid, as 5 in Fig. 5. When this type of device is used, the screen having been placed in a window space with its ends extending into the sash guideways in the window casing, the thin leaf of the device at is fastened to the longitudinal rail of the frame of screen section 1 as shown at Fig. 3, so that the thickened leaf of the device when the hinge is open will block the end of the frame of the screen section 2, thereby preventing the closdown. Upon raising the window, the thickened leaf 3 may be swung up out of range of the end of the frame of screen section 2 and the two sections shoved together.
Fig. 5 simply shows a construction applicable to either type of device explained above. 5 in Fig. 5 represents one leaf of the hinge bent so as to serve the same purpose as a thickened leaf.
The inventor does not intend to confine himself to the. type of hinge described above and shown in the illustrations. The hook and eye type of hinge may be used for this purpose as well as the flap type shown herein.
The device can be used in connection with any extension window screen consisting of two sliding sections and of ordinary construction. It is designed to be utilized in connection with any device for looking a Window sash.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, in a lock for an extension window screen consisting of two sliding sections, of a hinge with means for fastening one of the leaves of same to the frame of the screen section to be used farthest out of doors and blocking means upon the other leaf of hinge, adapted to block the end of the frame of the screen section nearest in doors, or swing free of same, as desired.
2. The combination, in a lock for an extension window screen consisting of two sliding sections, of an arm with means for pivotallyfastening one end of same to the frame of the screen section to be used farthest out of doors and blocking means upon the other end of the arm, adapted to block the end of the frame of the screen section used nearest indoors, or swing free of same, as desired.
