UNITED STATES PATENT oEEioE.
HARRY E. PAGKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AND JAMES N. STACY, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
COMBINED CIGAR-CUTTER AND MATCH-SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed September 26,1906. Serial No. 336,880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY E. PACKER and JAMES N. STACY, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago and Portland, respectively, in the counties of Cook and Multnomah, respectively, and States of Illinois and Oregon, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cigar-Gutter and Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
For a fnll'understanding of the invention and'the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line yy of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line z2 of Fig. 3.
lorresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base of our improved cigar cutter and automatic match safe, and 2 the stand thereof which is secured on the base 1 by screws or any similar fastenings. From the stand 2, a substantially rectangular and comparatively flat guide case 3 projects upwardly, said case being surmounted by a match box or hopper 4, the side walls of which curve downwardly toward a contracted opening which is preferably about the length and width of the ordinary match, and which communicates directly and coincides with the upper open end of the guide case 3. The upper side edges of the hopper 4 are formed with outstanding flanges 5 designed for engagement by the inturned flanges 6 of a lid 7 which is adapted to be slid on the hopper 4 and retained thereon by the engagement of the flanges 5 and 6. By removing this lid, the hopper may be filled with the desired number of matches without the necessity of inserting the matches in the hopper one at a time. The lid 7 is provided with a slot 8 above and in registry with the upper end of the guide case 3.
An ejector plate 9 is mounted to slide up and down within the guide case 3 and is provided with side arms 10 and with a groove 11 in its upper edge, said groove being adapted to engage one of the number of matches within the hopper and carry the match upwardly through the slot 8 in the lid so that it may be readily removed from the groove in the ejector plate and used. The side arms 10 of the ejector plate 9 project outwardly through slots 13 into vertical tubes 12 that are located at opposite sides of the said guide case. The latter is provided at its middle with vertical openings 15 in its opposite walls, said openings being designed to receive a bolt 16 which extends through an aperture through a similar aperture in a knife bar 17. The bolt 16 is connected to the knife bar 17 intermediate of the ends of the latter, and said knife bar is detachably secured to the stand 2 at one end by means of a screw 18 and link 19. the bolt 16 and its opposite end, the said knife bar is provided with a knife 20 and at its opposite end with a knob or handle 21 by which it may be depressed to carry the ejector plate downwardly as well as the knife 20. The latter in its downward movement passes across an opening in the cutter plate 22 which is formed integral with the stand 2 or secured thereto in any desired manner.
To raise the ejector plate 9 automatically and carry with it the knife bar 17, I have provided helical springs 23 which arelocatcd within the vertical guide tubes 12, with their upper ends bearing upon the side arms 10, while their lower ends encircle and are therefore held by upwardly projecting studs 24 on the base 1. The stand 2 is provided with clearance openings 26 for the head and nut of the bolt 16, when it passes downwardly, and the base is preferably provided with a slot 25 to accommodate the lower edge of the ejector plate and the knife 20 in the downward movement of these parts.
In the practical operation of the device, the match box or hopper is filled with matches, the lid being removed for this purpose and the lid is then replaced. To then actuate the device for the purpose of cutting the end off of a cigar and securing a match to light the cigar, the operator only has to depress the knob or handle 21, and this will result in carrying the knife 20 past the cutter plate 22 to sever the end of the cigar inserted through the aperture of the said plate, while at the same time the downward movement of the said plate through the instrumentality of the knife bar 17 will carry the ejector plate 9 downwardly until its upper grooved edge approximately reaches the lower end of the hopper and the upper end'of the guide case 3. As the hopper or match box 4 is contracted at its lower end, the matches in the box tend to fall toward the opening in the upper end of the guide case and consequently a match will be sure to roll into the groove 11 of the ejector plate, and thereupon, when the knob or handle is released, the springs 23 will automatically raise the knife bar 17 and thereby carry Between its point of attachment tov in the ejector plate and out of the openings 15 and the ejector plate upwardly so that its grooved upper cessity of inserting one match at a time and which, when the handle of the device is depressed to cut off the end of the cigar and then released, will automatically present a match in position to be used. As the ejector plate moves upwardly in its automatic action to present a match at the slot in the lid 7, from the lower contracted opening of the hopper or match box to the upper wider part, it is obvious that the grooved edge of the ejector plate will always pass through the body of matches in the box and thereby always insure that a match shal be presented at the slot 8 at each and every actuation of the device.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: i
1. A device of the character described, comprising a stand, a guide case projecting upwardly from said'stand, a match box surmounting said guide case and provided with the bottom opening registering with the upper end of said guide case, an ejector plate adapted to move up and down in said guide case and pass upwardly from the lower end of the match box to the .top of the same, said ejector plate being provided with oppositely extending side arms, vertical tubes in which said arms project and in which they are movable, springs mounted in said tubes below the arms and tending to press the arms and ejector plate upwardly,
and means for depressing said ejector plate, said means embodying a knife bar.
2'. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a stand supported on said base, a guide case projecting upwardly from said stand, a match box surmounting said guide case and provided with a bottom opening in communication with the upper end of the guide case, and with sides curving inwardly toward said opening, an ejector plate mounted to slide up and down in said case from the bottom to the top of the match box, said ejector plate being provided with oppositely extending side arms, tubes on opposite sides of said case and into which said side arms extend, springs mounted within said tube and hearing at their upper ends upon said side arms, the base being provided with upwardly projecting studs riveted in the lower ends of said springs, the guide case being provided with an opening in its wall, and a knife bar fulcrumed on the stand, there being provided a bolt connecting said knife bar to the ejector plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we atfix our signatures in presenceof two witnesses.
HARRY PACKER. JAMES N. STACY.
