Be it known that I, FREDERICK ALnrrH, re-

siding at Casselton, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Combination Match-Box, Cigar- Cutter and Ash-Receiver, of which the following is a specification. y rIhis invention relates generally to a match box or safe, and more particularly to a combination match box or safe, cigar-cutter, and ash-receiver, the object being to provide a combination device of the character described in which the plunger which operates the will also operate the blade for cutting off the end of a cigar.

Another object of the invention is to provide a feeding device'which will deliver only one match at a time and cannot be thrown out of order.

Another object is to provide a detachable ash-receiver which can be removed and the ashes discharged therefrom; and a still further object is to provide a detachable receiver for holding the burned matches, which receiver can also be detached and the matches thrown therefrom.

The invention consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out i'n the claim.

In carrying out my invention I employ a base A, upon which is arranged the vertical box or casing B, said box or casing having a hopper C in the upper end thereof, a catchchamber D in the lower end thereof, and an intermediate chamber E,within which is jou rnaled the vibrating roller F, said roller having a groove G produced 4therein to receive a single match from the hopper C, which match is 'discharged through an openin g H, produced in the side of the box or casing, when the feeddrum is properly vibrated, and in order to vibrate said drum for the purpose of feeding the matches from the hopper I employ a mutilated pinion I, which is mounted upon one end of the drum, said pinion resting in the recess I', produced in the side of the box, and meshing with the said mutilated. pinion is a plunger-rod K, having rack-teeth K', which mesh with the teeth of the mutilated pinion, and as the plunger-rod is forced down the feed-drum will be vibrated to discharge a match into the match-receiving receptacle L, arranged at one side of the main box or casing B.

The plunger-rod K slides in a vertical recess K2 and is normally projected upwardly by means of a spring K5, held in the recess K4, cut into the side of the box or casing B.

The lower end of the plunger' K is formed with a cutting-blade K5, by means of which the butt-ends of the cigars are severed, said ends being projected through an opening K7, produced in the side of the box, which openings lead directly into the catch-chamber D, which is intended to catch the severed ends of the cigar and retain them until it is desired to remove them from the device, said butts being removed through an opening D', produced in the base orbottom of the chamber D,which opening is normally closed bya pivoted bottom D2, turned by means of a suitable handle D3.

A metallic side plate B is secured to the recessed side of the box or casing B for the purpose of holding the operating plunger and spring in their proper places, and this side plate B' is provided with openings B2, which register with the openings K7 and through which' the duced for the purpose of having the cuttingblade sever the end therefrom.

The hopper C has a cover C fitted thereon, said cover having a pivoted locking-barCz, which is adapted to be turned into engagement with the side recesses C3 for the purpose of locking the top thereon, said lockingbar being removed by means of a button C4, which projects through the top of the hopper. The top of the hopper is also provided with an opening C5, through which the upper end butt-end of the cigar is to be intro# IOO I of the plunger-rod passes,

said plunger-rod being provided with a detachable cap-piece or head K8.

The mutilated pinion is rigidly iixed to one end of the feed-drum in any suitable manner; but in practice I prefer to provide the bore or central opening of the said pinion with a series of inwardly-projecting teeth which engage a corresponding series of indentations in the end of the feed-drum, it'being of course understood that the said feed-drum is provided with a reduced projecting end upon which the mutilated pinion is secured.

The sides of the box or casing are extended along the base, as shown atB3, and between such extended sides is arranged a detachable ash-receiver M, having a bar M', upon which to knock the ashes.

At the side of the, box or case opposite to the operating mechanism is arranged a receptacle N for receiving the burned matches, said receptacle being detachably secured to the box B by means of hooks N', which engage the slots N2 and the pins N3 located therein, said receptacle being readily removable as well as theash-receptacle in order that they may be thoroughly cleaned, when desired.

Across the bottom of the chamber E, in which the vibrating feed-drum is journaled, is a stop-rib O, and the feed-drum is provided with projecting portions O and O2, which engage the said stop-rib O and limit the forward or backward movement of the feed-drum, thereby preventing the said drum from moving too far in either direction and causing it to stop at the proper positions to receive and discharge the match.

N ow in operation, when it is desired to fill the hopper with matches the buttonV upon the top of hopper is revolved to unlock the said top, which is then turned around 'upon the plunger-rod until the hopper is opened. This hopper is then filled with matches, the top turned back and locked. When a person desires a match, it is only necessary to press down upon the plunger-rod, which, carrying `manner and is rough surface by means of which the match the rack-teeth,meshes with the mutilated pinion,vibrates the feed-drum, and discharges a single match into the match-receiving re ceptacle at the end of the base. At the same time the end of the cigar can be severed by merely inserting-the said end into one of the openings in the side of the box or case, and as the plunger-rod descends in operating the feed-drum the sharp blade at the lower end thereof will sever the butt-end of the cigar, said end falling into the catch-chamber arranged beneath the match-feeding drum.

The base can be shaped in any desired preferably provided with a can be easily scratched.

Suitable receptacles are attached to the device for receiving the burned matches and ashes, which receptacles are readily detachable for the purpose of cleaning them.

It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and efficient combination match-box or safe, cigar-cutter, and ash-receptacle.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a combined match-safe and cigar-cutter,

the combination with the box or casing having a hopper at the upper end,a catch-chamber at the lower end and an intermediate chamber, of the vibrating feed-drum journaled in said intermediate chamber, the mutilated pinion arranged upon the end of said drum, the plunger-rod having rack-teeth adapted to engage the said mutilated pinion, and having a blade at its lower end, the spring for returning the said plunger-rod to its normal position, the side of the catch-chamber having openings produced therein below the cutting-blade of the plunger-rod, substantially as shown and described.
