COAT-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907 Application filed April 9, 1906. Serial No. 310,702.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Au. rora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coat hooks and especially to that class having locking means to prevent theft of the garment hung thereon.
The device is especially useful for securing outer garments such as overcoats and cloaks and is adapted to be used wherever such garments are temporarily laid aside and is especially applicable for use in public places .such as restaurants, reading rooms and places of similar character.
The chief objects of my invention are to provide a simple, efficient and durable locking hook for coats and cloaks.
Another object of the device is to provide an automatic lock for a coat hook, so that the garment placed upon the hook can beinstantly locked thereon and protected from theft.
Another object is to provide a separate and special key for each hook thus preventing the possibility of removal of the garment unless that special key is used to unlock the device.
With this and other minor objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing hereunto annexed and forming a part of this specification :-Figure l is a side view, in elevation, of my improved cloak and coat hook adapted to be secured to a wall or casing and showing the method of securing a coat thereon; a portion being broken away to disclose some of the inner parts; Fig.
Y 2 is a side view in elevation, of the same device in an unlocked position, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the device in its locked position, some portions being broken away to show certain parts more clearly.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 4 indicates a base plate-from which projects a cylindrical arm 5, preferably formed integral with said plate and provided with a bulbous head 6. Above the said arm 5 and also formed integral with the plate 4 is a lug 7. A retaining member 8, semi-cylindrical in form and having a concavity on the under side is adapted to engage the upper surface of the arm 5, and is provided at its outer extremity with a cap 9 adapted to cover the upper and outer surfaces of the head 6. From the upper side of this retaining member projects a lug 10 pivotally secured to the lug 7 by a rivet 11. The interior of the arm 5 is provided with a cylindrical bore 12 throughout the greater part of its length in which is slidably mounted a tubular latch-bolt 13, held in an extended position within the said bore by means of a spring 14, which abuts at one end against a pin 15, which is fixed in the arm 5 and passes through slots 15 in the said latch bolt 13, the opposite end of the spring engaging an annular abutment 16 formed integral with the said bolt. At the rear end of said latch bolt 13 is a notch 17, and at the front end a projecting beveled latch head 18. upper wall of the arm 5 is a slot 19 which communicates with the interior bore 12 and permits the entranceof the free end of a lug 20 fixed in the retaining member 8 and provided with a slot 21. The latch head 18 en gages this slot and prevents movement of the retaining member when said parts are in engagement. The under surface of the anterior portion of the member 8 as well as its cap 9 is formed with a recess 22, thus leaving a moderate interval between the adjacent surfaces of the retaining member and the arm 5.
In order to retract the latch bolt 13 and thus release the lug 20 by the removal of the latch-head 18 from engagement with the slot 21, I provide a lock 23 of any common form, preferably attached to the rear face of the base plate 4. The end of the locking bolt 24 is beveled and so related to the notch- 17 that when the said lock bolt 24 is projected upward by means of a key 25 the said bolt 24 will penetrate the notch 17 and its beveled face engaging the lug 26 will retract the latch bolt 18, thus removing the latch-head 23 from the lug 20, in which case the retaining member will be free to be raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby releasing the garment previously held upon the arm 5 by said retaining member.
The method of operating the device is as follows :The retaining member 8 is raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, where it is held In the by gravity against the wall or casing to which it may beattached and the lock-bolt 24 is retracted within the casing of the lock 23, the latch bolt 13, then taking the position shown in Fig. 3. The coat or other garment is now hung upon the projecting arm 5 so as IIO ' The user can then take the key, which may have been left in the lock or hung upon an adjacent nail or peg, and place it in his pocket until he desires to use the garment. He then raises the lock bolt 24 by means of the key, which he leaves in the lock, and raising the retaining member 8, the garment can be removed from the arm. It will be noted that turning the key 25 to lock the bolt 24 unlocks the latch bolt 13 and, conversely, when the garment is locked on the arm 5 the bolt 24 is in anunlocked position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim, is
1. A. device of the character described ineluding a base plate, an arm projecting from a lug adapted to automatically engage said latch-bolt, and separate key-operated means for retracting said latch bolt to release said. retaining member, said means secured to the rear side of said base-plate.
3. A device for the purpose specified in cluding a base-plate, a tubular arm projecting from said base plate and provided with an enlarged TIES/(1,31 latch-bolt adapted to be reciprocated within the tubular arm, a retaining member co-eXtensive with the said arm and adapted to engage its upper portion and overlap the said enlarged head, a lug secured to said retaining member, a latch-head attached to said latch-bolt and adapted to engage said lug, means for yieldingly retaining said latch-bolt and head in engagement with the said lug, separate key-operated means for releasing the said latch-bolt and head from engagement with the said lug, and means for raising the said retaining member from the said arm when so released.
4. In a coathook, a base-plate, a tubular arm extending from said plate, a hollow latch-member slidably mounted in said arm, a spring arranged in said latch and adapted to extend the same, a retaining member pivotedon said base plate and adapted to partly embrace said arm, a lug on said member adapted to engage said latch, and a lock secured to the rear of said base plate, said lock comprising a bolt adapted to engage and hold said latch against the action of said spring.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN PATTERSON.
