i To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK SoBIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coatesville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in a lock and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel means of slidabiy securing one end of the shackle in the lock casing and which will limit the outward movement of the shackle from the casing, thus preventing the shackle and casing from becoming separated when the shackle is in an unlocked position.

Another object of this invention is to provide a pivoted tumbler adapted to be normally urged into engagement with the shank of the shackle and which is provided with a shoulder to be engaged by the tumbler when the shackle is moved to an unlocked position and which holds the shackle against withdrawal until it is rocked upon its pivot by a key.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a lock of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawin 's, in which:

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a frame of a lock casing having secured thereto, a rear wall 2 and a cover 3 by any desired suitable fastener. The frame 1 is provided with an opening 4 in the upper end thereof for slidably receiving the shank 5 of a shackle 6. The shackle 6 has the usual hook portion '7 having formed upon its free end, a head 8 to be received within the recess 9 of the frame when the shackle is in a locked position. The shank 5 has a cut out portion 10 for receiving one end of a tumbler 11, which is pivoted within the space 12 of the frame 1, the pivot being carried by the rear wall 2. A shoulder 13 is formed upon the shank 5 adjacent the cut out portion 10 and is adapted to engage the free end of the tumbler as shown at 14for causing the tumbler to hold the shackle 6 in a locked position, as shown in Fig. 1. A coiled spring 15 is interposed between the frame 1 and the shank 5 for normally urging the shank 5 outwardly of the casing of the lock when the tumbler 11 is engaged from the shoulder 13. A spring 16 is interposed between the frame 1 and tumbler 11 for normally urging the end 14 thereof into engagement with the shoulder 13 and within the cut out portion 10 of the shank 5 for holding the shackle against movement within the casing of the loc The tumbler 11 is provided with a cut away portion 17, for engagement with the ward of a suitable key that is adapted to be inserted through a key hole in the cover 3. The frame 1 is provided with a large space 18 for permitting the rotation of the key after being inserted into engagement with the cut out portion 17 so that the tumbler 11 will be rocked upon its pivot to disengage its end 14 from the shoulder 13. A suitable guard 19 is positioned in front of the cut out portion 17 of the tumbler and has one arm portion thereof secured upon the pin which pivotally supports the tumbler 11. The

guard 19 is adapted to permit the ward of the key to pass in engagement with the cut out portion 17 to rock the tumbler 11, making it necessary that acorrect key be inserted within the casing of-the lock and the ward thereof corresponding with the guard 19.

Formed upon the shank 5 of the shackle 6 is a lug 20 adapted to he received Within an elongated recess or socket 21 formed in the inner face of the'cover .3, which provides a construction which will limit the outward movement of the shank from the frame 1 or the casing of the lock, thus preventing the shackle from becoming detached from the casing of the lock when in an unlocked position.

Referring to my modified form of invention as disclosed in F 7, it consists of a modified form of sl1ackle-22 and manner of securing it within the frame 1. The shackle 22 has a shank 28 similar in construction to the shank (5 of the shackle 6 and is provided with an elongated slot 24 for receiving a pin 25 carried by the cover .3 and the rear wall 2 of the lock casing, which will permit the shackle to move into an unlocked position but will prevent the entire withdrawal of the shank 23 from the frame 1.

The hooked portion 26 of the shackle 22 has an offset portion 27 at its free end and on which is formed a head 28 to be received within the recess 9.

\Vhile I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope .of the invention as claimed;

front and rear cover plates secured to the frame, and said front cover plate having a groove in its inner face, an inner frame secured to the first named frame and consisting of a vertical member having angularly related ends disposed in spaced relation to one of the vertical members of the first named frame to provide a shackle slideway, a shackle having one long leg and a short leg, and said long leg slidable in said slide-way,

one of the angular ends of the inner frame having a recess to receive the end .of the short leg of the shackle, lugs formed on the end of the long leg of the shackle and extendin angularly to each other and one of said lugs received by the groove of the front cover plate, a dog pivoted to the cover plates and located for movement within the inner frame, a spring having one end bearing against the vertical member of the inner frame and its other end bearing against the dog for forcing one end thereof to normally engage the other lug, and a spring between the first named frame and the end of the long leg of the shackle to force the same outwardly of the slideway when the dog is disengaged from the last named lug.
