WM Inventor ha I ggw itxjese Patented December 6, 1904:.
EDWARD JULIUS OTTO ROTHER, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
GARMENT SUPPORTING AND LOCKlNG DEVIICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,802, dated December 6, 1904.
Application filed February 9,1904. Serial No. 192,844:I No model.)
To all 2072,0771, it puny concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD JULIUs O'r'ro ROTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a new and useful Garment Supporting and Looking Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved garment supporting and locking device, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive,
and eflicient device of this character particularly designed for use in restaurants, hotels, private dwellings, and the like, and adapted to secure to theowner of a hat, coat, or simi lar garment a comparative safeguard against removal of the garment by an unauthorized person.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a garment-su 'iporting device in which the key serves as a check for the garment or other article supported, so that removal of the garment without mutilation is impossible except by application of the proper key.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claimshereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
1n the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment supporting and locking device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing in dotted lines the position of the locking-cam when the article is locked. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combined key and check detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The device in its preferred form consists of a supporting-bracket or stationary member 5 and a cam or movable clamping member 6.
The bracket 5, which may be formed of metal or other suitable material, is provided at one end with a lateral extension 7, adapted to bear against a wall or other support 8, said bracket being secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by screws or similar fastening devices 9. The opposite end of the bracket 5 is curved outwardly, as indicated at 10, so as to properly space the same from the wall or sup port 8, the terminal portion of the bracket be ing formed with a circular enlargement 11, the flat side face 12 of which is provided with aseries of radiating locking notches or depressions 13, arranged at unequal distances from the periphery of said enlargement, as shown. Eccentrically mounted on the enlargement 11 of the bracket, as by a pin 14;, is the clamping member 6,said member being preferably circular in shape and of the same diameter as the enlargement. The side face of the clamping member 6 adjacent the enlargement is provided with a key-slot 15 for the reception of a key-check 16, and seated in a second recess 17, communicating with the recess 15, is a spring-pawl 18, the locking-lip 19 of which normally engages one of the notches or de pressions 13 and locks the clamping member against rotation. 1V hen the key-check 16 is inserted in the recess 15, the end thereof bears against the spring-pawl and disengages the locking-lip 19 from the notches 13, thereby permitting the clamping member to be moved to release the hat, coat, or other article supported. The key 16 is provided with a handle 16, upon which is stamped or otherwise printed a numeral or other designating charactor, as 20, which corresponds to a similar designating character on the lateral extension of the bracket 5, so that only the person holding the proper key will be able to unlock the device and release the garment.
In operation the rim of the hat is placed against the wall or support just back of the clamping member 6 and the key-check 16, introduced in the slot 15, and said key pressed downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2-of the drawings, thereby forcing the clamping member in engagei'nent with the rim of the hat. The withdrawal of the key at this point causes the locking-lip of the spring pawl to automatically engage one of the notches or depressions and lock the clamping member in adjusted position. To release the hat, it is simply necessary to insert the key in the slot, which action releases the spring-pawl, thereby permitting the key and clamping member to be moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. similar garments the collar or other portion thereof is placed back of the clamping member and the operation above described repeated.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple garment-supporting device in which the use of hooks and analogous devices are entirely dispensed with, thereby making it imperative for a person to hang and securely lock his property and to hold in his possession a numbered key or check in order to recover the same.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a garment supporting and locking device, a stationary member, a clamping member eccentrically pivoted thereto, a pawl carried by said clamping member for locking the latter in garment-engaging position and a key-check adapted to engage said pawl for releasing said clamping member.
2. In a garment supporting and locking device, a stationary member, a movable clamping member pivoted thereto, and provided with a key-receiving slot, a spring-pawl seated within said slot and adapted to engage the stationary member for locking the clamping member in garment-engaging position, and a key-check adapted to engage the spring-pawl for releasing said clamping member.
3. In a garment supporting and locking device, a stationary member provided with a series of looking notches or recesses, a movable clamping member eccentrically pivoted thereto and having a key-receiving slot formed therein, a spring-pawl seated within the keyslot and adapted to engage the notches or recesses for locking-the clamping member in garment-engaging position and a key-check In locking coats and adapted to engage the spring-pawl for releasing said clamping member.
I. In a garment supporting and locking device, a stationary member bearing a designating character or symbol, a movable clamping member eccentrically pivoted thereto and having a key-receiving slot formed therein, a locking device seated within said slot and adapted to engage the stationary member for locking the clamping member in garment-engaging position, and a key-check bearing a corresponding designating character or symbol adapted to engage the locking device for releasing said clamping member.
5. In a garment supporting and locking device, a supporting-bracket one of which is provided with an enlargement having a series of locking notches or recesses formed therein, a movable clamping member eccentrically pivoted to said enlargement and provided with a key-receiving recess, a spring-pawl provided with a laterally-extending locking-lip seated within said slot and adapted to engage the notches or recesses for locking the clamping member in garment-engaging position and a key-check adapted to engage said pawl for releasing the clamping member.
6. In a garment supporting and locking device, a supporting-bracket provided at one end with a lateral extension bearing a designating character or symbol and having its opposite end curved outwardly and provided with a terminal enlargement, the face of which is formed with a series of locking notches or recesses, a clamping-disk eccentrically pivoted to said enlargement and provided with a keyreceiving slot, a spring-pawl seated within said slot and adapted to engage said notches for locking the clamping-diskin garment-engaging position, and a key-check bearing a corresponding designating character or symbol adapted to engage the spring-pawl for releasing the clamping-disk.
