Be it known that I, J OHN CLAYTON BAOKUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smethport, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Hangers for Coats, Hats, or the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention aims to provide improvements in looking holders for coats and hats to be used in public halls and places of like character to insure safety of the same during the absence of the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to secure an extreme simplicity of lock mechanism and cooperating holding devices, therebyrendering the structure of greater utility and general desirability.

For a full. description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached. v

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying:

The device in its preferred form is adapted to provide two independent mechanisms arranged in the-same casing and adapted to be used separately. Two hanging-hooks are of course used in the above-mentioned form and a corresponding number of lock-slides It will be understood, however, that any practicable number of the mechanisms may be embodied in a single article.

In the device as illustrated in Fig. 1 the easing 1 is adapted to be secured in position upon a Wall or other support inany suitable manner,

a flanged portion being shown by which the device is fastened in position. Upon the rear side ofthe casingl, and'preferably rigidly therewith, are formed the key-seats 3, in which the key-checks 4 are disposed. These key-checks 4 are prrovided with suitable designa-ting mattertoindicate which holder they are adapted to unlock, the key-seats 3 havin g corresponding indicating matter thereon. It is contemplated that each key-check shall be unlike the other, so as to prevent the use of oneof same on more than one mechanism. From theilower portion of the casing 1 is projected an arm 5, from which extends hook members 6, upon which the Wearingapparel is hung. Lock-slides 7 are slidably mounted in the casing l and have engaging heads 8 at their lower ends to cooperate with the hook members 6 in a manner readily comprehended. The lock-slides 7 are held normally out of engagement with the hook members 6 by a spring 9 of ordinary form, having arms 9 and 9 engaged in notched lugs 10 5 formed with the dogs 12. A lug 15 extends laterally from the trip-arms 14:, the key-check being adapted to strike said lug to actuate the trip-arms, and thereby hold the dogs 12 out of engagement with the teeth upon the lock-slides, which are then subject to actuation by the respective spring- arms 9 and 9 .v

In the operation ofthe locking mechanism, the key-check 4 being in its seat and the lockslide 7 raised, the hat and coat are properly hung upon one of the hook members 6. The look-slide 7 is then moved downward by pressure upon the finger-piece 16, at the upper end thereof, the dog 12 riding over the teeth 11 upon the lock-slide. The said lock-slide is thus locked, having its head approximately in contact with the hook member 6. The key-check may now be removed, and when it is desired to unlock the device same is introduced into the seat 3, and one of the wards 17 striking the lug 15 of the trip-arm 14 the latter is moved down and the dogs 12 thrown out of engagement with the teeth of the lockslide 7, which under the tension of the spring 9 is caused to move away from the hook member 6.

It is found to be a desideratum of much importance that the key-checks 4; be not subject to removal except when the lock-slide is projected from the casing, and special means are provided to accomplish this purpose. It will be easily seen that such a structure is valuable in that less liability of losing the checks by accidental misplacement or the like is incurred. To carry out the abovenamely, to lock the key-check 4 in its seat when the hanger is not being useda lever 18, comprising vertical arms a and I), connected together by a horizontal arm 0, is disposed Within the casing. The arm a is disposed between notched lugs 19, which are projected from the base of the casing, the notches 20 being wider at the top than at the bottom to permit a pivotal or rocking movement of the lever 18. A lug 21 upon the arm a of the lever 18 is adapted to engage over a shoulder 22 upon the keycheck, being normally held in such position by a spring 23,which bears against the upper edge of the arm a of the lever 18. In order to release the key-check when the lock-slide is in engagement with the hook member, a cam 24; is located upon the arm I) of the lever 18, and the lock-slide 7 in its downward movement engages this cam and rocks the said lever 18, so as to cause upward movement of the arm ct. The lug 21 being then raised out of the way of the shoulder 22 of the key-check, the same may be removed and retained by the user of the device. When it is desired to remove the hat and coat, the upward movement of the lock-slide 7, which is caused by insertion of the key-check and tripping of the triparm 14, as before described, releases the camarm I; of the lever 18, and the lug 21 simultan eously engages over the shoulder 22 of the key-check, again locking same in position.

In Fig. 5 a modified form of lock-slide 7is shown, the same consisting of a U-shaped member the ends of which are adapted to cooperate with the hanging-hooks 6 and 25, the latter being also rigidly secured to the casing. This latter form is very desirable in that the coat and hat may be hung upon separate hooks, requiring the same locking mechanism as in the other form.

Fig. 6 shows the preferred form of the lockslide when the casing is constructed for a single locking mechanism. In the last mentioned forms of the device the cam-arm b of the lever 18 is actuated by an offset portion 26 upon the side of the lock-slide 7. The key-seat 3 is formed rigidly with the rear of the casing, and pins or projections 27 are also formed at the lower portion of the seat 3, the wards of the key-check being arranged with special reference to the size of these projections, which are received by the notches 28 of the key-checks in a manner well understood. It will also be understood that I am not restricted to the exact structure as herein shown, but may modify the form of the different parts in accordance with the broad spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- l. In a device of the character described, and in combination with a casing and a hook rigid therewith, a spring-actuated lock-slide arranged for sliding movement within the easing and adapted to close upon the hook to confine an article thereon, teeth disposed upon the side of the lock-slide, a spring-actuated dog normally engaging the teeth of the slide and adapted to hold the same in looking position with the book, a key-check adapted to trip the said dog from engagement with the teeth of the slide to unlock the device, and means operated by the said slide for locking the key-check thereto when the slide is open and for unlocking same when the slide is closed upon the hook, substantially as set forth.

2. In a device of the character described, and in combination with a casing and. a hook rigid therewith, a spring-actuated lock-slide arranged for sliding movement within the casing and adapted to close upon the'hook to confine an article thereon, teeth disposed upon the side of the lock-slide, a dog having a trip-arm integral therewith and normally engaging the teeth of the lock-slide, a keycheck adapted to trip the aforesaid trip-arm to disengage the dog from the lock-slide to unlock the device, a lever pivoted within the casing and having an arm adapted to'lock the key-check in its seat when the device is unlocked and to unlock the same when the device is locked, said lever being operated by the lock-slide, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the character described, and in combination with a casing and a hook rigid therewith, a spring-actuated toothed lock-slide mounted for slidable movement in said seat, said key-check being adapted to strike the trip-arm of thedog to disengage same from the lock-slide to unlock the device, a lever also pivoted Within thecasing and having an arm normally engaging the keycheck to lock same to the device, a second arm carried by the lever and disposed in the path of movement of the lock-slide, the lastmentioned arm being adapted to be operated by locking movement of the lock-slide to rock the lever and unlock the key-check, substantially as specified.

4. In a device of the character described,

and in combination with a casing and a supporting-hook, a lock-slide for cooperation with the hook to confine an article thereon, a spring for normally holding the lock-slide away from the hook, teeth disposed upon a side of the lock-slide, a spring-actuated dog normally engaging the teeth of the lock-slide and adapted to lock same upon the hook, a trip-arm integral with the said dog, a keycheck adapted to operate the trip-arm to disengage the dog from the lock-slide to unlock the device, a lever pivoted in the casing and having an upper arm adapted to normally engage the key-check to lock same to the device, a lower arm carried by said lever, a cam disposed upon said arm and adapted to be engaged by the lock-slide when the device is locked, whereby the lever is rocked and the upper arm thereof is thrown out of engagement with the key-check unlocking same, substantially as described.

5. In a device of the character described, and in combination with a casing and independent supporting-hooks secured thereto, a spring-actuated lock-slide mounted in the casing and comprising a U-shaped member having its ends adapted to cooperate with the independent supporting-hooks to confine articles thereon, teeth disposed upon the side of the lock-slide, a dog adapted to normally engage the teeth of said lock-slide to lock the device, a key-check for tripping the dog from engagement with the lock-slide to unlock the device, and means for locking the key-check to the device when same is unlocked and for unlocking the same when the device is locked, substantially as described.
