^ SAMUEL S. BENT, OF PORTCI-IE STER, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 815,557, dated January 5, 1869.
IMPROVED DOG-KENNEL OR HOUSE.
1., I The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. BENT, of Portchester, in the county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Houses for Dogs,`
8m.; and I do herebydeclare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part Y oi' this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of vsaid house, with the cornice removed on one side to show the roofing;
Figure 2 is a sectional plan of the front portion of said house; and l Figure 3 is a section at the line x x.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Houses for dogsxare usually of an unsightly appearance, and to ornament a Wooden dog-house with carved work would be costly, and dog-houses made complete at a manufactory, and transported a distance to the place where they are to be used, would be costly in eight, on account ofthe bulk.
The same remarks apply, to a certain extent, to wren and other bird-houses.
The object of my invention is to provide a neat, cheap, dln-able, and Vstrong metal vfront to the doghouse, that will be ornamental, and can be used with Wooden or metal sides and roof, and can be connected to the same with facility, so that the doghouse can be taken apart for transportation, or the metal portion can be easily connected with wood-work that could be built in almost any country place where the house is to be used, thus insuring strength and neatness of appearance.
In the drawing,"a is the metal front, formed with flanges, l l, at the vertical angles, that receive screws for connecting the front a with the sides b b. These ilangesand screws, coming on the inside, are not novticeablc.
The upper part of the front, a, is formed with the flanges 2, that project beneath the roof-boards or covering c, and are screwed thereto, as seen in fig. 3.
The said flanges 2 aid in producing thel appearance of a cornice, and this ornamental appearance may be still more increased by the ornamental metallic strips d d, fastened upon the projecting ends of thereofboards.
A similar front to the front, a, may be used on the opposite part of the house, or a closed end or back may be employed.
In the front, a, is an opening, e, forming an, ornamental doorway, and f is a ventilator inthe upper pal't of the front, forming also an ornament.
g g are rings, to which the chain for the dog may be attached.
What Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic front, for a dog or other small house,l formed with the doorway, and flanges for attaching the sides and roof', as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signa-l ture, this 13th day of June, A. D. 1868. v
SAMUEL S. BENT.
