BARBERS POLE.

BARBERS POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,912, dated January 26, 1886. Application filed February 19, 1884. Serial No. 121.254. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT F. WALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Barbers Pole, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- Ings.
My invention relates to that class of signs commonly known as barbers poles, and it has for its object to provide improved means for illuminating the same at night, whereby it will be plainly visible, and'apparent to persons of the existence of a tonsorial establishment, serving as a sign for the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pole of cheap and simple construction, which shall be ornamental and attractive in appearance.
The invention consists inthe improved construction and combinations of parts, hereinafafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved pole. Fig. 2 is a vertical sec tion of the same. Fig. 3 is a modification.
In the accompanying drawings,in which like letters refer to corresponding parts through out the figures, A represents the pole, which may be of any desired form and ornamented in any preferred manner, as may be desired.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the pole consists of three parts or sections, B G D, the lower section, B, being constructed of wood and provided at its upper end with an annular shoulder, a. The sections 0 D are constructed of metal and suitably connected together, the intermediate section, D, having its lower end made tubular or cylindrical in form to fit over the upper end of the section B, said cylindrical portion 0 resting on the shoulder a. Annular rings or flanges b b project outwardly from the upper and lower ends of the intermediate section. The glass lights or panes of the section D are secured in place by metallic strips (Z d, extending from the upper and lower ends of the said section, and the latter is provided with a hinged door at one side, which will allow ready access to the interior of the section D, in whichiis placed a lamp, Z. The top opening of the upper section, 0, is closed by a block formed with a spherical head, G, which may be gilded or otherwise ornamented. Apipe, E, is arranged within the upper section, and has its lower flaring end arranged above the chimney of the lamp, which is placed within the section D. The upper end of this pipe passes through the ball G, and is provided with a cap or covering, F, to exclude snow, rain, and dust from enter- 6 ing the pipe, the latter serving to carry off the smoke and heat from the lamp.
The flanges b b, besides forming an ornament for the pole, serve to prevent water dripping from the upper section from passing over 6 5 the panes of glass.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modification, in
which the pipe for conveying smoke arising from the lamp is dispensed with, and the smoke carried through openings formed in the side of the upper portion, 0, near the top of the same. It will also be seen that, if desired, the pole may be constructed of wood entirely, having the upper portion hollow, and have a suitable pipe for conveying the 7 smoke and heat from the same.
It will be seen from the above description that a pole constructed in accordance with my invention is neat and attractive in appearance, and affords a useful and ornamental sign. I am aware it is not broadly new to construct a barbers pole with a compartment to contain a lamp, said compartment being formed by a series of varying-colored panes of glass, through which the light shines. This I do not broadly claim.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A barbers pole comprising the lower 0 section, B, formed with a shoulder, a, the intermediate section, D, having its lower cylindrical end fitted over the upper end of section B and resting on the shoulder a, the upper section, 0, a block closing the open. upper end of the latter and formed with a ball or head, G, a pipe, E, arranged within the upper section, 0, and passing through the head G, and a cap or covering, F, for the pipe above the latter, as set forth.
2. A barbers pole comprising the lower section, B, the intermediate section, D, containing the glass panes or lights, and forming a compartment for the lamp, the upper sec- 5 tion, 0, provided with a head or ball, G, a pipe, E, located within the upper section and having its lower end connecting with the chimney of the lamp and itsupper end passing a v through the ball or head, and a cap or covering, F, for the upper end of the pipe above 10 the head, as set forth. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ROBERT FRANK WALTER.
