MOLDFOR CASTING METALS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907,
Application filed May 18, 1906. Serial No- 317310.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J our; H. SHAW, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molds for Casting Metals, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, and in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a mold embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a
' top .view of the same, Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a longitudinal vertical section on line 44 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5, a detail view of a modified form otthe locking mechanism for one of the upright. plate rigidly secured thereto form-- side plates. r
In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.
This invention relates to molds for casting metals, andparticularly to that class of molds made from metal. I
. When closed metal molds 'areused, a difficulty exists in that the expansion of the casting in the mold is apt to crack the mold. Various methods have been employed to overcome thisdifliculty, and the present invention has for its object the production of a novel means for permittin the casting to expand without injury to t e mol 0 this end, the several parts of the mold are yieldingly held in position so that they are capable of a slight movement upon the expansion of the casting while'they are still held in position. A
To this end, the invention consists of the several improvements and combinations of parts set forth and claimed hereinafter- Referring to the: drawings for a more articular descriptiom'the part designate by the letter, A represents a plate formin the base or bottom plate of the mold, and an ing the back plate of the mold.
To the top of the back plate is fulcrumed by a pin C, or other means, a pivoted member D, which when in proper position forms the front of the mold. The member D is provided with a flangeE ada ted to fit on the bottom plate A of the mo (1.
F designates a handle'secured to the member D to swing it to and from its closed osi: tion. The member D is held in its close position by a hook G fulcrumed at H, andv provided with a handle'I; The hook G. takes into a link J pivoted to a projection K on the bottom plate A (Figs. 1 and 3). A spring L bears against the under sideof the hook Gr and.a ainst the flange E of the. member D to hold t e hook in osition, while allowing the member D a slig t play.
M designates the side lates of .the mold, which are. adapted, as s own more particularly in Figs ..1 and 4, to rest on the bottom late A against the rear plate B and member The side: lates M are provided withoflsets N, to which are pivoted by means of a fulcrum pin 0 a link P. The pin 0 projects through a slot Q in the link P, and the. other end of the link is pivoted at R to a bar- S, with a handle T. The bar S is provided with a toe piece U," adapted to bear on the upper side of the link P, as shown more particularly in Fig.4, While a sprin V fits between the link P and bar S. W designates studs or posts on the back plate B.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The member D is swung into position by means of the handle F and the linkJ engaged by the hook G.- The side plates are then forced against the sides of'the member D, leavin between the side plates, member D, rear p ate B and base A a cavity for the casting to be formed of molten metal poured into this hollow space, through a channel Y, in one or both of the side plates M. The side lates are held'in position by the sprin V. oreing the link P and bar S apart, so. t at the bar S will abut against the stud W, as shown more particularly in Fi s. land 4. When, however, the metal in t e mold expands, the memberD will be moved slightly outward against the tension of the spring L, which permits the hook G to be slightly turned While still engaged in the link J. The side plates M will be moved slightly outward upon the expansion of the metal in the mold,
- as the springs V will be contracted and allow the links P to turn somewhat on their pivots,
Y and the lower end of the .link and the bar be brought closer together.
When it is desired to remove the side plateof the mold, thebar Sis turned on its pivot. R by means of the handle T, so as to swing r the bar. away from. engagement with r the stud .W, whereupon the plate Mmay be with-. drawn b the handle T. The hook G may be then 'sengaged from the link J', by means of the handle I, by compressing the spring L, and the member D swung on its pivot bv the handle F. u
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5 a
' combination with a base; of a mold section and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A metal mold for casting articles, hav ing a base; removable mold sections-adapted to rest thereon; mechanism for locking said mold sections in place on said base; and
yielding meansifor permitting a slight move ment of the mold sections in different directions at various angles while in their locked positions, substantially as described.
2. In a metal mold for casting articles, the
pivotally connected with said base; mech anism for locking the free end of said section on said base; and yielding means for permitting a slight movement of the mold sec: tion while iii its locked position, substantiallyas described.
3. In a metal mold for casting articles, the
combination with a base; of agmold section; a lever pivoted to said section; and a device on said base adapted to beyieldingiy en 'aged I hold said moifl ill-its. lackedby said lever to position, substantially as described.
4. In a metal mold for casting articles, the 1 combination with a base; of a mold section-1 pivoted to swing to and from its operative position; a lever v device on said base adapted to be yieldingly engaged. by said lever, substantially as. do? scribed.
pivoted thereon; and a' i 5. In a metal mold for casting articles, the
combination with a base; of a mold section rigidly secured thereto a further section pivoted thereto movable sections; mechanism for locking said movable sections to .said rigid section and said pivoted section to said base; and yielding means for permitting said movable and pivoted sections a slight movement when in their locked. substantially as described.
