sEcIFrcA'rIoN raming part of Letters ratentNo. 732,966, dated July 7, 190s.
` Applicationtlea May 13,1903..Y saliti No. 157,542. (No model.)
Be itknown that I, J osiiPH SCHINHARL, al
'citizen of Germany, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan,'county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casting- Molds, Vof l which the following is a specification.
The object o f myinvention is tofprovide a new and improved mold for casting pipe-sec tions-such as elbows, Ts, cross-pieces, and
the like-in iron, brass, and other metals for mold is simple in construction, can be opened and closed very rapidly, and thus permits of casting a largequantityof pieces in a very short time.
In `the accompanying drawings, in whiclilike figures of reference indicate like parts in improved casting-mold closed. Fig.r2 is `a plan view closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longi-V tudinal sectional View. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The mold is constructed with a base 1, to the upper surface of which the rear mold-section 2 is detachablysecured by means of a bolt 3, so as to permit of removing said section readily in case a different pattern is to be cast. By means of a bolt 4 a hinge-piece 5 is held on the rear edge of the `rear moldsection 2, at the top thereof, and to said hinged piece 5 a top piece 6 is pivoted by means of a pivot-bolt 7, which top piece is provided with an aperture 8 for receiving, a neck or eziten-` sion 9 of the core 10, according tothe shape of the piece to be cast. The top piece is pro` vided at its front end with a downwardlyex tending lip 11 and also with a handle 12, to the free end of which a latch-barl3 isipivot-V ed, which terminates in hook 14, for apurposeto be set forth hereinafter.
The front mold-section 15 rests loosely upon the basel, on which it can slide in the direction toward and from the rear section 2, and it isof the same height as said rear section,
i and the width from front to rear of said front section 15 at the top is such that when the top section is lowered the lip 11 of this top section will rest on the front of said front section 15. The front and rear sections have their inner edges so molded and shaped as to conform to part of the outer surface of the piece to be 1 a pouring-hole.
` cast, and the bottom edge of the `top section u6 is also shaped accordingly. The core is provided at its lower end with a centering projection 16, which ts into a corresponding recess 17 in the inner edge of said front section 15. An elbow-lever V18 is pivotedto a jaw 19, projecting frointhe front of the baseplate, and is provided with longitudinal slots 2O in its lowerforked member or arm, and
`through said slots a pin 21 passes, which is held in a jaw 22, projecting from the front section 15, at the bottom thereof. The lever 18 also has a laterally-projecting pin 23,Which can be engaged by the hook 14 on the lower end of the latch 13. j At each side of the rear and front sections 2 and 1,5, which sections are in line inthe direction from front to rear, a side section24 is pivoted to the base 1 by means of pivot-bolts A25, passing through the lower `ends ofsaid side sections and through lugs 26, projecting upward from the base. These side sections have their lower edges 27 rounded semicircularly concentric with the pivots in vertical position they will rest snugly against the side faces of the front and rear sections 15 and 2, and the inner surfaces of said side sections are recessed or cut out to to be cast, as shown at 28 in Fig. 4. At the upper end of each recess 28 an inclined inletopening 29 is formed, which extends to the Supper edge of the side section and serves as A lever 30 is pivoted by a bolt 3l'on the top section 6 and is provided at oneend with a handle 32.
This lever has 75. pins 34, so that when these side sectionsiare V8o conform to the outer surfaces of the article two opposite notches 33 for receiving headed studs 34, projecting from the upperends of the side sections 24.
`The operation is as follows The proper rear-section 2, front section 15, `and side sections 24, according to the article to be cast, are secured, hinged, and mounted on the base 1, the top section 6 having been hinged, by means of the hinge-piece 5,` to the rear section. The latch-hook 14 is disengaged from the pin 23, the top section 6 is raised, and the lever 18 swung down, whereby the front section 15 is pulled to the front. tion 6 is raised, the centering projection 9 of the core 10 is placed into the opening 8, and
then the top section is swung down and be-V IOO The top secfore it arrives in its lowermost position the lever 18 is swung upward, whereby the front section 15 is pushed to the rear, and when all parts have assumed their proper position the top section 6 can swing down into the position shown in Fig. 3 and is then locked in place by engaging the hook 14 of the latchrod 13 with the pin 23 of the lever 18. The core 10 is now held in proper position and centered by its core projections 9 and 16 at opposite ends within the openings 8 and 17 of the top section 6 and front section 15,respectively. The side sections 24 are then swung up and the lever 30 turned on its pivot 31, so as to cause the headed studs 24 to pass into the notches 33 of said lever 30, whereby the side sections are locked in place at the sides of the front,'rear, and top sections. The molten metal is then poured in through the casting-openings 29 at the top and fills the space between the core and the recesses in the several mold-sections. After the casting has been made the side sections are unlocked and swung down, the lever 18 is unlocked, the top section is raised, the lever 1S is then swung down for the purpose of pulling the vfront section 15 to the front, and the casting can be removed and immediately thereafter another made in the manner described, and so on.
