Description
J. A. PEASE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CASTING DOOR-PLATES.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 5,243, dated August v141, 1847.
To all wh-0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JULIUs PEASE, of of the city and county of Philadelphia, Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making Door-Plates, and do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description of the mode and operation of making the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of a mold (Figure 1.), and a movable set of letters of the alphabet, or types cut with a bevel on each side (Fig. 2), in order to keep them from slipping out of their places, and for the purpose of casting door-plates, &c., in one solid piece, with the name sunken into the face of the plate; said letters or types', serving as a matrix, and are raised for said purpose, above the surface of the groove at a suitable height, as in letter C Fig. 2. Through the center of said mold, lengthwise, and Adirectly in the middle of the sunken portion of the same, is cut a groove C, (Fig. 1,) into which the said letters or types are slid and kept in their places by means of a bevel made to correspond with the bevel of the letters or types. There is attached at one end of said mold a screw D (Fig. 1,) which runs through an upright E, (Fig. 1,) which upright is attached to an arm-piece extending out from the bottom of the outside of said mold. Said screw plays against a space O, (Fig. 1,) placed in at the end of the line of types or letters after they are set up in the groove C, and thereby presses said letters together., and assists to keep them firmly fiXed in their several places. At one end of .said mold is a detached end (Fig. 4,) in which is cut an orice or gateway G in order to admit the metal of which said plate is to be composedsaid end or detached piece is let in at the end of said mold and thus forms one end of the same. On the two outer sides of the bottom part of said mold, lengthwise, and directly in the two centers of the same, two projecting pieces H H, Fig. 1, are attached, atV a suitable distance' from each other, forming mort-ices, to` receive prongs attached to the corresponding sides -of the detached upper part of the said mold, and designed lto Ikeep the upper and lower part of said mold in their proper places. The upper part of said mold (Fig. 3,) has a projection on the inner side which forms the back part of the said door plate when cast, (or it may be cast with or without said projection). In the center of said upper part of said mold, thereis an orifice, I perforated in order to receive the screw on' the back part of the plate; which screw is cast in the plate at the same-time of cast.
ing the same. There is also a corresponding orifice L, (Fig. 3,) cut in the end of the said upper part of the mold, forming a part of the gateway to receive the metal. There is also on the outer sides of the upper part of said mold, lengthwise, and directly in the two centers of the same, a projecting prong K on each side, which prongs extend down the sides and enter between the projecting pieces H, H, on Fig. 1 or mortices, thus keeping the upper and lower parts of the said mold in their proper places.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination and arrangement of a mold and the letters of the alphabet as described, for the purpose of casting rdoor and other plates, with the letters or name'sunken in the face of said-plate, and said plate when cast, together with said letters, to be cast in one solid piece and by one operation.
. J. A. PEASE.
