MRK CROSBY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Lette/rs Patent No. 83,936,
(lated November 10, 1868.
IMPRCVEID PARLGRBEDSTEAD.
The Scheduie referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK CROSBY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Parlor-Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the i'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawn ings, which make part of this specification, in which the marks of reference correspond. f
1The nature of my inventien consists in constructing aparlor-bedstead in such a manner that the sides and ends of the bedstead, when closed, shall form the ends and top of a case, resembling an elegant commode or sideboard, and when opened, shall form a cheap and simple bedstead, the entire case forming the bedstead, and vice cc'rsa.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l represents a perspective view of-niy invention when closed, forming, in appearance, a sideboard or commode. l
Figure 2 represents a perspective view when opened, forming a bedstead. l
In the drawings, A and B represent one side-piece ofthe bedstead, .as shown in fig. 2,' and one end of the -commode or sideboard, in appearance, when closed.
C D representthe head and footpieces of the bedstead, and, vwhen closed, the top of the commode or sideboard, in appearance, as shown in iig. l.
E is to represent a head-board extension, being .hinged to the piece C, and,A when closed, forms a backpiece or ornament. A
F F represent pieces which serve as supports or legs to the foot of the bedstead, being hinged near the front corner of the case, and underneath the projecting edge ci' the footfpiece D, and when closed forms a finish or projection to the case.
A A and B B', as shown in fig. 2, are hinged to the upper edge of each side'of the hase G G', and at a distance from their ends, to allow them to meet vwhen' open, andwhen closed they pass or turn down into the base, G, their corners being rounded to allow them to open, as shown in iig. 2.
The base, G, may be provided with casters so as to allow it to be moved around easily.
The back-piece, or head-board piece, E, is provided with two projecting pieces downward, H H', to serve as supports or legs to the head of the bedstead, (see fig. 2,) and, when closed, extend down back of the commode or sideboard, in appearance.
The base, G, supports the centre of the bedstead, when open, as shown.
In iig. 2, K represents the ornamental front ofthe case, and may be made to represent a commode, sideboard, bureau, or other article of furniture, as may be desired.
I am well aware that burean-bedsteads have here:- tofore been constructed so as to open in longitudinal, horizontal, 'and parallel sections, in such a manner as would, when opened, form a bedstead, with sides and head and foot-pieces; therefore I do not broadly claim such.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent isl. In combination with the side-pieces A and 1B,they /hinged pieces'li F', when attached to the front part, K, in such a manner as, when closed, to form a finish around the corner and across the side-piece A, and underneath the projecting end of the top, D, substantially in the manner shown and described, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the hase, G, the end-pieces A and B, having their ends rounded off so as to allow them to turn down into the base, G, when closed, and when open to form a continuous side-piece at the bot tom, without the addition of intermediate pieces, substantially in the manner described, as and for the purposes set forth.'
MARK CROSBY.
